Ford Tempo/Topaz 1984-1994 Repair Guide

See Figure 14

The air conditioning system in the Tempo/Topaz use either R-12 or R-134a type refrigerant. Before preforming any service to your A/C system, determine which type of refrigerant is needed.

In general, if your vehicle was produced prior to 1994, the A/C system uses R-12 refrigerant. If your vehicle was produced in 1994 or later, most likely, it uses R-134a type refrigerant.

In addition to determining which year your vehicle was produced, also check the A/C tags found on different parts of the A/C system in the the engine compartment. Those A/C systems that use R-12 type refrigerant have SILVER identification tags, while those systems which use R-134a have GOLD identification tags.

The refrigerant R-12 (Refrigerant-12) is a chlorofluorocarbon which, when released into the atmosphere, can contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. Ozone filters out harmful radiation from the sun. An approved R-12 Recovery/Recycling machine that meets SAE standards must be employed when discharging the system. Follow the operating instructions provided with the approved equipment exactly to properly discharge the system or have the procedure done by a professional shop.
