Ford Tempo/Topaz 1984-1994 Repair Guide

Throttle Position Sensor

The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) being used on the gasoline fuel injected Tempo/Topaz uses, a rotary tang to control the throttle shaft blade. When removing or installing a TPS, be careful not to bent any of these tangs.

To test or adjust a TPS, a digital volt/ohmmeter is needed. Proceed as follows:

  1. Connect a suitable digital volt/ohmmeter to terminal A (output terminal) and terminal B (ground) of the TPS.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and check the voltage reading at closed throttle. If the voltage reading is not 0.0-1.1 volts, loosen the TPS mounting screws and rotate the TPS until the correct voltage is obtained.
  5. If the correct TPS voltage cannot be obtained, replace the TPS.
  7. Slowly open the throttle and observe the digital volt/ohmmeter. The voltage should gradually increase to 4.0 volts at wide open throttle.
