Ford Thunderbird/Cougar 1983-1997 Repair Guide

The compressed refrigerant used in air conditioning system expands into the atmosphere at a temperature of -21.7°F (-30°C) or lower. This will freeze any surface, including your eyes, that it contacts. In addition, the refrigerant decomposes into a poisonous gas in the presence of a flame, and is harmful to Earth's atmosphere. If discharging A/C system is necessary use an EPA safety approved recovery system.

  1. Discharge the system. See Routine Maintenance .
  3. Remove the battery.
  5. Disconnect the refrigerant lines at the condenser and cap all openings immediately!

The fittings are spring-lock couplings and a special tool, T81P-19623-G, should be used. The larger opening end of the tool is for1/2in. discharge lines; the smaller end for3/8in. liquid lines. To operate the tool, close the tool and push the tool into the open side of the cage to expand the garter spring and release the female fitting. If the tool is not inserted straight, the garter spring will cock and not release. After the garter spring is released, pull the fittings apart.
