Ford Thunderbird/Cougar 1983-1997 Repair Guide

These procedures apply only to vehicles equipped with fourth generation Electronic Engine Controls (EEC-IV). This is found on all models except 1995-96 4.6L and 1996 3.8L engines
The Key On Engine Off and Engine Running self tests detect faults that are present at the time of testing. Intermittent faults that have occurred in the last 80 (40 for some applications) warm-up cycles are detected during continuous self test and stored in the EEC-IV memory
Vehicles with a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) concern must run quick test and address all service codes present
If all phases of the quick test result in a Pass, it is likely that the problem is non EEC-IV related and will be found elsewhere
After service, rerun quick test to ensure that service was effective
