Ford Thunderbird/Cougar 1983-1997 Repair Guide

Pressure Switch

See Figures 1 and 2

The Anti-lock Brake System must be depressurized before any service is performed. To depressurize the system, turn the ignition OFF and pump the brake pedal at least 20 times, until an obvious increase in pedal pressure is felt.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Detach the valve body electrical connector. Failure to disconnect the connector can result in damage to the connector if struck by removal tool.

On 1989-92 vehicles, the switch can best be accessed from underneath.

  1. Remove the pressure switch with special socket T85P-20215-B or equivalent.

If a new pressure switch is installed, the pump motor relay must be replaced.
