REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Fig. Fig. 1 Place a suitable receptacle under the fluid pan, then remove the bolts
Fig. Fig. 2 If the pan has no drain plug you will have to exercise greater care to minimize the mess
Fig. Fig. 3 Tilt one corner to control the fluid as it is dumped into the drain receptacle
The torque converter on the C4 and C6 transmissions has a drain plug. If the converter is drained, refill the C4 with 5 quarts of fluid and the C6 with 8 quarts of fluid.
Raise the vehicle so the transmission oil pan is readily accessible.
On the C4 disconnect the fluid filler tube from the pan and allow the fluid to drain into an appropriate container. On the C6 and AOD, start removing the pan bolts so that the fluid drains from one corner.
It is not recommended that the drained fluid be used over again; refill the transmission with new fluid. However, in an emergency situation, the old fluid can be reused. The old fluid should be strained through a No. 100 screen or a fine mesh cloth before being reinstalled.
Remove the transmission oil pan attaching bolts, pan and gasket.
Clean the transmission oil pan and transmission mating surfaces.
Install the transmission oil pan in the reverse order of removal, torquing the attaching bolts to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm) and using a new gasket. Fill the transmission with 3 qts. of the correct type fluid, check the operation of the transmission and check for leakage.
The C4 automatic transmission uses Type F automatic transmission fluid only. The C6 through 1976 uses Type F. The 1977 and later C6 and all AOD use type CJ or Dexron®II. When starting the engine after the transmission fluid has been drained, do not race the engine. Move the gear shift selector through all of the ranges before moving the vehicle.
Remove the transmission oil pan and gasket.
Remove the fine mesh oil screen by removing the machine screws holding it to the lower valve body.
When removing the filter on C4 transmissions, be careful not to lose the throttle pressure limit valve and spring when separating the filter from the valve body.
Install the new filter screen and transmission oil pan gasket in the reverse order of removal.
