Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Install an engine support fixture.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery from the vehicle
     
    Battery tray
     
    Shift linkage
     
    Drive shaft
     
    Backup lamp switch electrical connector
     
    Speedometer speed sensor electrical connector
     
    Clutch release cylinder pipe by releasing clip
     
    Damping block connection nut and bolt
     
    Three rear mounting bracket bolts
     
    Rear mounting bracket from the transaxle
     
    Two rear damping block retaining bolts
     
    Rear damping block from the front cross member
     
    Two cage retaining bolts
     
    Three transaxle upper mounting bracket bolts
     
    Upper mounting bracket and cage
     
    Three transaxle upper retaining bolts
     

  8.  
  9. Support transaxle with a transmission jack.

    Seven transaxle lower retaining bolts
     
    Transaxle assembly from vehicle
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Support transaxle with a transmission jack.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle assembly. Use care when inserting the input shaft into the clutch assembly. If the spline on the input shaft does not align with the clutch assembly spline, turn the crankshaft slightly to aid in spline alignment.

  5. Install the seven transaxle lower retaining bolts and tighten to the following torque values:

    Lower retaining bolts -a- : 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm)
     
    Lower retaining bolts -b- : 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm)
     
    Lower retaining bolts -c- : 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Three transaxle upper retaining bolts and tighten to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm)
     
    Cage retaining bolt and cage
     
    Three transaxle upper mounting bracket bolts and bracket. Tighten the transaxle upper mounting bracket bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Two rear damping block retaining bolts and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
     
    Rear damping block to the front cross member
     
    Three rear mounting bracket bolts and the bracket. Tighten the rear mounting bracket bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
     
    Damping block connection nut and bolt and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
     
    Clutch release cylinder pipe and secure with clip
     
    Speedometer speed sensor electrical connector
     
    Backup lamp switch electrical connector
     
    Drive shaft
     
    Shift linkage
     
    Battery tray
     
    Battery
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the engine support fixture.
  10.  
  11. Connect the positive battery cable first.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable second.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the fluid level in the transaxle and add, if necessary.
  16.  
  17. Check the function of the engine, clutch and transaxle.
