Diagnosis & Testing

  1. Check battery age and connections.
  2.
  3. With the ignition OFF, install a battery tester and verify the condition of the battery.
    NOTE
If the battery is not sufficiently charged test results will not be accurate.

  4.
  5. Connect a Vat 40 tester or equivalent to the battery.
  6.
  7. Turn the ignition to the OFF/LOCK position.
  8.
  9. Observe and record the battery voltage reading at the battery terminals on the tester.
  10.
  11. Start the engine and observe the system voltage reading on the tester. Does the voltage increase from the first specified (engine OFF) to the second (engine ON) specified range-
  12.
  13. Turn ON the following accessories:

    Headlights-HI beams

    A/C on Max

    Blower Fan-On high

    Rear window defogger

    Heated seats, if equipped

  14.
  15. Maintain engine speed at 2,500 RPM. Voltage readings should be between 13.9-15.5 volts.
    NOTE
When measuring generator output current, be sure the inductive probe encircles the generator output wire.

  16.
  17. Connect an inductive ammeter probe to the output circuit of the generator.
  18.
  19. Start the engine.
  20.
  21. Increase engine speed to 2,500 RPM.
  22.
  23. Adjust the carbon pile as necessary in order to obtain the maximum current output.
  24.
  25. Is the generator output greater than or equal to the load test value as specified.

Alternator for 2.4L, 3.5L and 3.9L Engines. Rated out put 125 amp. Load test output 87 amp.

Alternator for 3.6L Engines. Rated out put 155 amp. Load test output 108 amp.

  26.
  27. If Alternator output is as specified the system is okay.
  28.
