Camshaft Position Sensor

Description & Operation



The camshaft position (CMP) sensor is triggered by a notched reluctor wheel built onto the camshaft sprocket. The CMP sensor provides four signal pulses every camshaft revolution. Each notch, or feature of the reluctor wheel is of a different size which is used to identify the compression stroke of each cylinder and to enable sequential fuel injection. The ECM uses the CMP sensor output signal to determine the camshaft relative position to the crankshaft position.

The CMP sensor is connected to the engine control module (ECM) by the following circuits:



A 5-volt reference circuit
 
A low reference circuit
 
A signal circuit
 

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engines
Exhaust Sensor
  1. Disconnect the exhaust camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Remove the CMP sensor bolt. Intake CMP shown, exhaust CMP similar.
  4.  
  5. Remove the CMP sensor.
  6.  

To Install:


NOTE
Inspect the CMP sensor for damage, replace as necessary.

  1. Lubricate the CMP sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the CMP sensor. Intake CMP shown, exhaust CMP similar.
  4.  
  5. Install the CMP sensor bolt and tighten to 89 inch. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the exhaust CMP sensor electrical connector.
  8.  

Intake Sensor
  1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the intake camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector (1).
  4.  
  5. Remove the CMP sensor bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the CMP sensor.
  8.  

To Install:

  1. Lubricate the CMP sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the CMP sensor.
  4.  
  5. Install the CMP sensor bolt and tighten to 89 inch. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the intake CMP sensor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the intake manifold cover.
  10.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Remove the CMP sensor bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the CMP sensor.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the sensor O-ring for wear, cracks, or leakage if the sensor is not being replaced.
  8.  

To Install:

  1. Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil and replace the O-ring if damaged.
  2.  
  3. Install the CMP sensor.
  4.  
  5. Install the CMP sensor bolt and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
  8.  

3.6L Engine
Bank 1 Right Side
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the bank 1 exhaust or intake camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the CMP sensor bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the CMP sensor.
  8.  

To Install:

  1. Install the CMP sensor.
  2.  
  3. Install the CMP sensor bolt and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the bank 1 exhaust or intake CMP sensor.
  6.  
  7. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  8.  

Bank 2 Left Side
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the bank 2 exhaust or intake camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the CMP sensor bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the CMP sensor.
  8.  

To Install:

  1. Install the CMP sensor.
  2.  
  3. Install the CMP sensor bolt and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the bank 2 exhaust or intake CMP sensor.
  6.  
  7. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  8.  

3.9L Engine
  1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine mount strut bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine mount bracket, if equipped with a convertible top.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the camshaft position actuator magnet electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft position actuator magnet bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft position actuator magnet and O-ring seal.
  14.  

To Install:

  1. Install the camshaft position actuator magnet O-ring seal and magnet.
  2.  
  3. Install the camshaft position actuator magnet bolts and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the camshaft position actuator magnet electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the engine mount bracket, if equipped with a convertible top.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine mount strut bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the intake manifold cover.
  14.  

Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the affected CMP sensor connector.
  2.  
  3. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between ECM side of the low reference circuit and ground.
    1. If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.

  5. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the ECM side of the 5 volt reference circuit and ground.
    1. If less than the specified range, test the 5 volt reference circuit for an open/high resistance or short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.  
    3. If greater than the specified range, test the 5 volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    4.

  7. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the signal circuit and ground.
    1. If less than the specified range, test the affected signal circuit for an open/high resistance or short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.  
    3. If greater than the specified range, test the affected signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Ignition ON, using a jumper wire connected to ground, momentarily touch the CMP sensor signal circuit repeatedly. The applicable CMP active counter parameter should increment.
    1. If the CMP active counter does not increment, replace the ECM.
    2.  

  10.  
  11. If the circuits test normal, replace the CMP sensor.
