Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor

Operation



The MAP sensor has a 5-volt reference circuit, a low reference circuit, and a signal circuit. The control module supplies 5 volts to the MAP sensor on a 5-volt reference circuit, and provides a ground on a low reference circuit. The MAP sensor provides a voltage signal to the control module on a signal circuit relative to the intake manifold pressure changes.

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the throttle body bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the throttle body from the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the MAP sensor and the MAP sensor port seal if it is still retained in the intake manifold.
  12.  

To Install:

  1. Install the MAP sensor with the port seal into the intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Connect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the throttle body gasket and replace if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Position the throttle body to the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Install the throttle body bolts and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the MAP sensor attaching screw.
  6.  
  7. Remove the MAP sensor and MAP sensor seal from the upper intake manifold.
  8.  

To Install:

  1. Install the MAP sensor and MAP sensor seal into the upper intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Install the MAP sensor attaching screw and tighten to 57 inch. lbs. (6.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the intake manifold cover.
  8.  

3.6L Engines
  1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the MAP sensor bolt and sensor.
  6.  

To Install:

  1. Lubricate the MAP sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the MAP sensor and bolt.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the mounting bolt to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the MAP sensor.
  8.  
  9. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  10.  

3.9L Engine
  1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug wire clip from the intake manifold bracket, if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Remove the MAP sensor bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the MAP sensor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the MAP sensor seal from the upper intake manifold.
  12.  

To Install:

  1. Install the MAP sensor seal into the upper intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Install the MAP sensor.
  4.  
  5. Install the MAP sensor bolt and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. If required, install the spark plug wire clip to the intake manifold bracket.
  8.  
  9. Connect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the intake manifold cover.
  12.  

Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the MAP sensor.
  2.  
  3. Ignition OFF for 90 seconds, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
    1. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.

  5. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
    1. If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.  
    3. If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    4.

  7. Verify the scan tool MAP Sensor parameter is less than 2 kPa.
    1. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal 3 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.  

  8.  
  9. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 3 and the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1. Verify the scan tool MAP parameter is greater than 126 kPa.
    1. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
    2.

  11. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the MAP sensor.
  12.  

To test (MAP) sensor observe the following procedure:



Ignition OFF, remove the MAP sensor.
 
Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1 and the corresponding terminal of the MAP sensor.
 
Install a jumper wire between the low reference circuit terminal 2 of the MAP sensor and ground.
 
Install a jumper wire at terminal  3 of the MAP sensor.
 
Connect a DMM between the jumper wire from terminal 3 of the MAP sensor and ground.
 
Ignition ON, with a vacuum pump slowly apply vacuum to the sensor while observing the voltage on the DMM. The voltage should vary between 0-5.2 volts, without any spikes or dropouts.
 
If the voltage reading is erratic, replace the MAP sensor.
