Removal & Installation

2.4L Engines
  1. Remove engine assembly.
  2.
  3. Remove engine front cover and timing components.
  4.
  5. Remove the balance shaft bearing carrier bolts.
  6.
  7. Remove the balance shaft assemblies.
    WARNING
It is possible to install the intake side balance shaft into the exhaust side and vice versa. Please use care not to install the balance shafts into the wrong bores. Engine vibration will result. Do not remove the bolt holding the sprocket.

  10.
  11. When the J 43650 is inserted in the block turn the J 43650 so that the foot becomes perpendicular to the shaft.
  12.
  13. Center the foot of the J 43650 on the balance shaft bushing.
  14.
  15. Once the J 43650 is centered on the balance shaft bushing, then insert the centering guide into the front balance shaft bore and tighten the nut with an appropriate wrench
  16.
  17. When the J 43650 is properly installed, before removing the bushing, the end of the tool should be 4.6 inch. (116 mm) from the block face.
  18.
  19. If the J 43650 is less than approximately 4.5 inch. (114 mm) recheck the tool alignment.
  20.
  21. Tighten the nut on the J 43650 until the tension releases. When the tension releases, remove the J 43650 and the balance shaft bushing.
  22.

To install:

  2.
  3. Seat the balance shaft bushing into the bore using the J 43650 and a wrench.
  4.
  5. When the J 43650 is fully seated in the engine block, remove it with a wrench.
    WARNING
If the balance shafts are not properly timed to the engine, the engine may vibrate or make noise.

  6.
  7. Install the balance shaft assemblies to the engine using the following steps:
    1. Place the number one piston at top dead center (TDC).
    2.
    3. Lubricate the balance shaft lobes with engine oil.
    4.
    5. Install the balance shafts into their bores.
      NOTE
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    6.

  8.
  9. Install the balance shaft retaining bolts.
  10.
