Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Remove the engine drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Use the Balancer Holder J-38122-A in order to prevent the crankshaft from rotating while loosening the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove and discard the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Position the crankshaft balancer to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt.
  4.  
  5. Use the holder in order to prevent the crankshaft from rotating while tightening the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 125 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine drive belt.
  10.  

3.5L & 3.9L Engines
  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  8.  
  9. Install the jack stands to the frame.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the left frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts.
  12.  
  13. Using the jack stands, lower the right side of the frame to access the crankshaft balancer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the torque converter covers.
  16.  
  17. Install the Flywheel Lock J-37096 to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and the washer.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft balancer using a 3 jaw puller.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealant to the keyway of the balancer.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft balancer using Installer J-29113.
  4.  
  5. Remove the installer.
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel lock to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.
  8.  
  9. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and the bolt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm) on 3.5L or 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) on 3.9L, plus an additional 70 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lock from the flywheel.
  14.  
  15. Install the torque converter covers.
  16.  
  17. Raise the frame to the original position.
  18.  
  19. Install and tighten the frame bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  20.  
  21. Install the right engine splash shield.
  22.  
  23. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Install the drive belt.
  28.  

3.6L Engine
  1. Install the engine support fixture.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine mount strut bracket.

  5. Remove the engine mount.
  6.  
  7. Remove starter motor.
  8.  
  9. Install the EN 46106 fly wheel holder through the starter mounting hole.
  10.  
  11. Using engine support fixture, lower engine approximately two inches.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  14.  
  15. Install crankshaft puller, tighten the center bolt to remove balancer pulley.

  17. Remove crankshaft pulley.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Apply lubricant to the inside of the crankshaft balancer hub bore.
  2.  
  3. Place the crankshaft balancer in position on the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install approved crankshaft installation tool.
  6.  
  7. Thread the tool in the crankshaft. Ensure you engage at least 10 threads of the tool before pressing the crankshaft balancer in place.
  8.  
  9. Push the crankshaft balancer into position by tightening the nut on the tool until the large washer bottoms out on the crankshaft end.
  10.  
  11. Remove the balancer pulley installation tool.

  13. Install and tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt in two steps:

    Step 1: Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    Step 2: Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt an additional 150 degrees using an angel meter.
     

  14.  
  15. Remove the flywheel holding tool.
  16.  
  17. Install the starter.
  18.  
  19. Using engine support fixture, raise the engine into position.
  20.  
  21. Install the engine mount.
  22.  
  23. Install the engine mount strut bracket.
  24.
