Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower AC compressor bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan bolts and the oil pan.
  12.

  1. Ensure that the oil pan and the sealing surface on the lower crankcase are free of all oil and debris.
  2.  
  3. Apply a bead of sealant around the perimeter of the oil pan and the oil suction port opening.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the lower AC compressor bolt.
  10.  
  11. Install the engine drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Fill the engine oil to the proper level.
  16.  
  17. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  18.  

3.5L & 3.9L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Drain the crankcase.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil filter and filter adapter.
  12.  
  13. Remove the catalytic converter.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wheel speed sensor harness from the right suspension support.
  16.  
  17. Remove the right front ball joint, bolt, and nut. Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove lower closeout panel.
  20.  
  21. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor bolts and position the compressor aside.
  22.  
  23. Remove the braces that support the engine to the transmission.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the oil level sensor.
  26.  
  27. Remove the retainers that secure the brake line to the frame.
  28.  
  29. Support the engine with a tall jack stand and a block of wood.
  30.  
  31. Remove the right side engine mount nuts and bolts.
  32.  
  33. Loosen the left side cradle bolts.
  34.  
  35. Remove the cradle bolts from the right front and the right rear.
  36.  
  37. Remove the starter.
  38.  
  39. Remove the oil pan side bolts.
  40.  
  41. Remove the oil pan bolts and oil pan.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealer to both sides of the crankshaft rear main bearing cap. Press the sealer into the gap using a putty knife.
  2.  
  3. Install a new oil pan gasket.
  4.  
  5. Position the oil pan to the engine, install the bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan side bolts and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the starter.
  10.  
  11. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the cradle bolts to the right front and the right rear.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the left side cradle bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees.
  16.  
  17. Install the right side engine mount and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Remove the support from the engine.
  20.  
  21. Install the retainers that secure the brake line to the frame.
  22.  
  23. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  24.  
  25. Install the braces that support the engine to the transmission.
  26.  
  27. Position and install the A/C compressor bolts.
  28.  
  29. Install lower closeout panel.
  30.  
  31. Install the right front ball joint, bolt, and nut.
  32.  
  33. Install the wheel speed sensor harness to the right suspension support.
  34.  
  35. Install the right front splash shield.
  36.  
  37. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  38.  
  39. Lower the vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  42.  
  43. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
  44.  

3.6L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine support fixture.

  5. Remove the right side engine mount.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
  10.  
  11. Remove the catalytic converter.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil pan.
  18.  
  19. Clean the oil pan and the engine block gasket surface.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the 0.315 inch. (8 mm) guide pins into the center oil pan rail bolt hole on each side of the engine block.

  3. Place a 0.118 inch. (3 mm) bead of RTV sealant on the block pan rail and the crankshaft rear oil seal housing.
  4.  
  5. Position the oil pan onto the block using guide pins.
  6.  
  7. Remove the guides from the engine block.
  8.  
  9. Loosely install the oil pan bolts.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the oil pan bolts in sequence shown.
    1. Tighten the 8 mm bolts (1-11) to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the 6 mm bolts (12, 13) to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).

  13. Install the air conditioning (A/C) compressor.
  14.  
  15. Install the catalytic converter.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Refill the engine oil.
  20.  
  21. Install the right side engine mount.
  22.  
  23. Remove the engine support fixture.
  24.  
  25. Connect the battery negative cable.
