Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the clutch actuator line from the clutch actuator.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the select cable from the transaxle select lever.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the shift cable from the transaxle shift lever.
  12.  
  13. Remove both cables from the cable bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cable bracket bolt, nuts and bracket.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector and position the harness out of the way.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector and position the harness out of the way.
  20.  
  21. Tie the radiator to the upper hood latch panel.
  22.  
  23. Install an engine support fixture.
  24.  
  25. Remove the upper transaxle mounting studs and bolt.
  26.  
  27. Raise and support the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the front wheels and tires.
  30.  
  31. Remove the left front fender liner.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the 2 front wheel speed sensor connectors.
  34.  
  35. Unclip the wheel speed sensor wire harness and position the harness out of the way.
  36.  
  37. Remove the suspension frame.
  38.  
  39. Remove the starter.
  40.  
  41. Remove the transaxle front and rear mounts.
  42.  
  43. Remove the wheel driveshaft.
  44.  
  45. Lower the engine and transaxle assembly with the engine support fixture enough to clear the left side inner body panel.
  46.  
  47. Remove the front transaxle brace bolts and brace.
  48.  
  49. Remove the rear transaxle brace bolt and brace.
  50.  
  51. Remove the lower transaxle mounting bolts.
  52.  
  53. Support and remove the transaxle from the vehicle.

  1. Support and raise the transaxle into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower transaxle mounting bolts. Hand-tighten only.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper transaxle mounting bolts. Hand -tighten only.
  8.  
  9. Tighten bolts (1, 4) in to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm), then to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the remaining bolts (2, 3, 5) to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the rear transaxle brace and tighten the bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the front transaxle brace and bolts and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Raise the engine and transaxle assembly with the engine support fixture into position.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel driveshaft to the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Install the transaxle front and rear mounts to the transaxle and tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).

  23. Install the starter.
  24.  
  25. Install the suspension frame.
  26.  
  27. Route the wheel speed sensor wire harness to the speed sensor.
  28.  
  29. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connectors.
  30.  
  31. Install the left front fender liner.
  32.  
  33. Install the front wheels and tires.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Remove the engine support fixture.
  38.  
  39. Connect the backup lamp switch electrical connector.
  40.  
  41. Connect the VSS electrical connector.
  42.  
  43. Install the cable bracket and tighten the fasteners to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Install both cables into the cable bracket.
  46.  
  47. Connect the shift cable to the transaxle shift lever.
  48.  
  49. Connect the select cable to the transaxle select lever.
  50.  
  51. Connect the clutch actuator line to the clutch actuator.
  52.  
  53. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  54.  
  55. Connect the negative battery cable.
  56.  
  57. Fill the transaxle to the proper level.
    NOTE
    Manual Transmission fluid part number 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is currently available through GMSPO. Current and past model vehicles listed above with either a manual transmission or transfer case that REQUIRE Dexron III should use the above listed manual transmission fluid. This fluid is a direct replacement for Dexron III in manual transmissions and transfer cases. DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of the manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases as a failure may result.

  59. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
