Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely and remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intermediate shaft to steering gear pinch bolt. Discard the bolt.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt at the steering column shaft. Discard the pinch bolt.
  12.  
  13. Slide the intermediate shaft off the steering column shaft.
  14.  
  15. To unseat the intermediate shaft seal from the dash, squeeze the 4 tabs on the seal individually, then pull toward the inside of the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the intermediate shaft/seal from the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering hoses from the from the power steering gear and cap the openings.
  20.  
  21. Remove the power steering gear bolts from the gear.
  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.

To install:

  1. Position the power steering gear to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the power steering gear bolts and tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering hoses to the steering gear.
  6.  
  7. Install the intermediate shaft/seal through the front of dash.
    NOTE
    To ensure seal is properly seated, inspect the 4 tabs on the seal from the engine side of the seal. Do not twist or squeeze the seal during installation.

  9. Seat the intermediate shaft seal by pushing forward from the inside of the vehicle, until all four tabs of the seal are fully seated.
  10.  
  11. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column shaft.
  12.  
  13. Install the new steering column pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft and tighten to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear shaft.
  16.  
  17. Install a new steering gear pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft and tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Install the wheels.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Bleed the air from the power steering system.
  26.  
  27. Check the front wheel alignment.
