Backfire - Intake Manifold

When the engine backfires through the intake manifold, check for the following, as necessary:

  1. Incorrect ignition timing.
  2.  
  3. Incorrect operation of the choke (carburetor equipped).
  4.  
  5. Choke setting (initial clearance) too large (carburetor equipped).
  6.  
  7. Defective Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve.
  8.  
  9. A very lean air/fuel mixture (carburetor equipped).
  10.  
  11. Fault with the computerized engine control system.
