REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

When installing new lifters, a pre-lube should always be applied to the lifter body. It is also a good idea to prime hydraulic lifters by submerging them in clean engine oil a depressing the plunger using an old pushrod. This allows the internal components of the hydraulic lifter to coat with oil before initial operation in the engine. All lifters should be replaced when a new camshaft is installed.

1.9L Engine

The camshaft directly actuates the rocker arms on the 1.9L engine, so no lifter assemblies are utilized.

2.0L Engine

See Figure 3

  1. Remove the rocker arm covers.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the rocker arms, then remove the pushrods and guide plates.
  4.  
  5. Using Valve Lifter Removal tool J-29834, or equivalent, remove the valve lifters.
  6.  

Keep all components in order. If reusing components, install them into their original positions.

  1. For proper rotation during engine operation, the lifter bottom must be convex. Check the lifter bottom for proper shape using a straight edge. If the lifter bottom is not convex, replace the lifter. Chances are if lifters are in need of replacement, so is the camshaft.

  3. Using the valve lifter tool, install the lifters into the block.
  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Adjust the valve lash.

2.2L Diesel

See Figure 4

The diesel engine uses solid type lifters.

  1. Remove the rocker arm cover and side cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rocker arm shaft assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the pushrods.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hydraulic lifters using an appropriate lifter removal tool.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the valve lash.

If any valve train components (lifters, pushrods, rocker arms) are to be reused, they must be tagged or arranged during removal to assure installation in their original locations.

2.5L Engine

See Figure 5

  1. Remove the rocker arm covers.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pushrod cover:
    1. Remove the alternator and bracket.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the ignition coil wires, then remove the spark plug wires and bracket from the intake manifold.
    4.  
    5. Remove the fuel pipes and clips from the pushrod cover.
    6.  
    7. Remove the oil pressure gage sender, then remove the wiring harness brackets from the pushrod cover.
    8.  
    9. Unscrew the nuts from the cover attaching studs, reverse 2 of the nuts so the washers face outward and screw them back onto the 2 inner studs.
    10.  
    11. Assemble the 2 remaining nuts to the same 2 inner studs with the washers facing inward, then using a small wrench on the inner nut (on each stud) jam the nuts slightly together.
    12.  
    13. Again using the wrench on the inner stud, unscrew the studs until the cover breaks loose, then remove the nuts from the studs and remove the cover from the engine. Remove the studs from the cover and reinstall them to the engine. Tighten the studs to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).Keep all components in order. If reusing components, install them into their original positions. If a new hydraulic lifter is being installed, all sealer coating inside the lifter must be removed.

  5. Remove the pushrods.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lifter studs and retainers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lifter guides and lifters.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the lifter and lifter bore for wear and scuffing. Examine the roller for freedom of movement and/or flat spots on the roller surface.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal, be sure to lubricate the lifter and lifter body using clean engine oil. If installing new lifters, all sealer coating inside the lifter must first be removed.

  15. When installing the pushrod cover, use a thin coating of RTV sealant around the entire cover flange. Install the cover retaining nuts and tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm) starting at the front of the engine and working toward the nuts in the rear.
