Output Shaft Pilot Bearing & Seal

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Except Bravada and Typhoon

The following procedure requires the use of Pilot Bearing Remover tool No. J-34011 and the Pilot Bearing Installer tool No. J-33842, or equivalents.

  1. Remove the axle tube and output shaft assembly from the vehicle. For details, please refer to the procedure located earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pilot bearing from the tube using J-34011 or an equivalent pilot bearing remover tool.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Lubricate the new seal lips and the new bearing using fresh axle lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Install the new bearing using a pilot bearing installer tool such as J-33842, or equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Install the new seal using J-33893, or an equivalent seal installer.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle tube and output shaft assembly.
  8.

Bravada and Typhoon
  1. Remove the axle tube and output shaft assembly. For details, please refer to the procedure located earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shaft along with the deflector and retaining ring. Strike the inside of the shaft flange with a brass hammer to dislodge it.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shaft seal and bearing using a slide hammer and axle tube bearing remover such as J-29369-2.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Lubricate the seal lips, bearings and bearing surfaces using axle lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Install the bearing using J-33844 or an equivalent bearing installer.
  4.  
  5. Install the seal using J-33893, or an equivalent seal installer.
  6.  
  7. Install the shaft to the tube taking care not to cut the seal with the splines.
  8.  
  9. Install the axle tube and output shaft assembly to the vehicle.
  10.
