Engine identification can take place using various methods. The VIN, described earlier in this section contains a code identifying the engine which was originally installed in the vehicle. In most cases, this should be sufficient for determining the engine with which your truck is currently equipped. But, some older vehicles may have had the engine replaced or changed by a previous owner. If this is the case, the first step in identification is to locate an engine serial number and code which is stamped on the block or located on adhesive labels that may be present on valve covers or other engine components.

1.9L ENGINE

The engine identification number is on a machined flat surface, on the lower left-side of the block, near the flywheel.

2.0L ENGINE

The engine identification number is stamped on a flat, machined surface, facing forward, on the front of the engine block, just below the head.

2.2L DIESEL ENGINE

The engine identification number is stamped on a flat, machined surface, facing forward, on the left-front of the engine block, just below the water pump.

2.5L ENGINE

The engine identification number is stamped on a flat, machined surface, on the left rear-side of the engine block, near the flywheel.

2.8L ENGINE



The engine identification code is stamped in two places. One on an upward facing, machined surface on the left front of the block, just below the head and above the water pump. The other on the right front of the engine, directly under the exhaust manifold.

4.3L ENGINE

The engine identification number is stamped in two places. One on an upward facing, machined surface on the right front of the block, just below the valve cover and above the water pump. The other, on the left rear of the engine, near the exhaust manifold.
