The steering box (manual or power) utilizes a recirculating ball system, which transmits force from the worm gear to the sector gear. A relay type steering linkage is used with a Pitman arm connected to one end of the relay rod. The relay rod is supported on the other end by an idler arm assembly; the idler arm pivots on a support which is attached to the frame. The relay rod is connected to the steering arms by two adjustable tie rods.
These trucks are equipped with a collapsible steering column which is designed to absorb an impact by collapsing, thereby reducing possible chest injuries during accidents. When making any repairs to the steering column or steering wheel, excessive pressure or force capable of collapsing the column must be avoided. The ignition switch, ignition lock and anti-theft system are built into each column.
On the automatic transmission, the ignition key cannot be removed unless the shift lever is in the Park position and the ignition switch is in the Lock position. Placing the key in the Lock position activates a rod within the column which locks the steering wheel and shift lever.
