REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

On some vehicles, the crankshaft damper is also referred to as the crankshaft balancer or crankshaft pulley.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- On 1987-90 vehicles, remove the serpentine belt.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Right front tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the right front engine splash shield.
- Remove the flywheel or torque converter cover.
- Use a suitable holding tool, as shown in the accompanying figure, on the flywheel to keep engine from rotating, then remove the bolt and washer from the damper.
- For 1987-90 vehicles, remove the balancer and the key.
- For 1991-99 vehicles, use a suitable crankshaft puller to remove the damper from the front of the engine. On 1993-99 vehicles, use 1 / 4 inch bolts to attach the puller to the damper, then screw in 1 / 4 in.
The balancer is serviced as an assembly. The pulley cannot be removed from the balancer.
- Install the key and balancer.
Install the bolt and washer, and while holding the flywheel stationary with the holding tool, tighten the bolt to the following specifications:
- For 1987-90 3.8L (VIN 3 and C) engines: 220 ft. lbs. (297 Nm)
- For 1991 3.8L (VIN C) engines: 98-112 ft .lbs. (130-11 Nm), plus an additional 3-60° rotation.
- For 3.8L (VIN L, 1 and K) engines: 110 ft. lbs. (11 Nm), plus an additional 76° rotation.
- Install the flywheel or torque converter cover.
- Install the engine splash shield.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly.
- Carefully lower the vehicle.
- If removed, install the serpentine belt.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
