REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.8L (VIN 3) Engine
LEFT SIDE (FRONT) COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankcase breather tube.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug wire harness cover, then tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the plugs.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve cover nuts, washers, seals and valve cover.
  8.  
  9. Using a gasket scraper or a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  10.  
  11. To install, use a new gasket and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the valve cover nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  

RIGHT SIDE (REAR) COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the C 3 I ignition coil module, the spark plug cables, the wiring connectors, the EGR solenoid wiring and vacuum hoses. Remove any fuel injection components that may interfere with the valve cover removal.
  4.  
  5. Remove the serpentine drive belt, as outlined in General Information & Maintenance of this repair guide.
  6.  
  7. Detach the alternator's wiring connectors, then remove the mounting bolt and swing the alternator toward the front of the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power steering pump from the belt tensioner (move it aside) and the belt tensioner assembly. It is not necessary to disconnect the power steering fluid lines.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine lift bracket and the rear alternator brace.
  12.  
  13. Drain the cooling system below the level of the heater hose, then disconnect the throttle body heater hoses.
  14.  
  15. Remove the valve cover nuts, the washers, the seals, the valve cover and the gasket.
  16.  
  17. Using a suitable gasket scraper or putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  18.  
  19. To install, use a new gasket and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the valve cover nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  20.  

3.8L (VIN 1, C and L) Engine - Except 1995-99 VIN 1 Models 1

LEFT SIDE (FRONT) COVER

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine drive belt, as outlined in General Information & Maintenance of this repair guide.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator-to-brace bolt, then remove the brace.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug wire harness and position aside.
  8.

  1. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts and remove the cover. It may be necessary to tap the cover lightly with a rubber mallet in order to dislodge it. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces and clean and dry all parts.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Place the gasket into position, apply a suitable thread-locking compound to the threads, then install the bolts and tighten them to 89 inch lbs. (50 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

RIGHT SIDE (REAR) COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt(s).
  4.  
  5. Without disconnecting the fluid lines, unbolt the power steering pump and position it aside.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering pump braces.
  8.  
  9. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  10.  
  11. For 3.8L (VIN C) engines, perform the following:
    1. Remove the EGR pipe.
    2.  
    3. Remove the EGR valve and adapter from the throttle body adapter.
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Unfasten the valve cover retaining bolts, then remove the cover. It may be necessary to tap the cover lightly with a rubber mallet in order to dislodge it. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces and clean and dry all parts.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Place the gasket into position, apply thread-locking compound to the threads, then install the bolts and tighten them to 89 inch lbs. (50 Nm).
  2.  
  3. If equipped with a 3.8L (VIN C) engine, perform the following:
    1. Install the EGR valve and adapter to the throttle body adapter.
    2.  
    3. Install the EGR pipe.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Install the power steering pump braces.
  6.  
  7. Place the power steering pump into position and secure with the mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the accessory drive belt(s).
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

1995-99 3.8L (VIN K and 1) Engines

LEFT SIDE (FRONT) COVER

See Figure 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plug wire harness and position it aside.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the retaining bolts, then remove the valve cover. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces and clean and dry all parts.

To install:
  1. Place the gasket into position, apply threadlocking compound to the threads, then install the bolts and tighten them to 89 inch lbs. (50 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Move the spark plug wire into position and secure it.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

RIGHT SIDE (REAR) COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the alternator rear retaining brace.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug wire harness and position it aside.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the retaining bolts, then remove the valve cover. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces and clean and dry all parts.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Place the gasket into position, apply thread-locking compound to the threads, then install the bolts and tighten them to 89 inch lbs. (50 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Move the spark plug wire into position and secure it.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator rear retaining brace.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
