REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Before beginning the radio removal procedure, be sure to note your radio presets, as these will be erased when you disconnect the negative battery cable.


WARNING
When installing the radio, do not pinch the wires, or a short circuit to ground may happen and damage the radio.

Buick

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower instrument panel trim plate by carefully prying it out.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air vent deflectors.
  6.  
  7. Remove the glove compartment retaining bolts, then remove the compartment.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
  10.  
  11. Remove the radio mounting bolts. Slide the radio out partially, then detach the electrical connector and speaker lead from the rear of the radio.
  12.  
  13. If installing a new radio, transfer the top and bottom brackets to the new radio.
  14.

  1. Attach the radio electrical connector and speaker lead, then position in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the radio mounting bolts and tighten to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Make sure to tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the accompanying figure.

Oldsmobile

1987-91 vehicles

See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the center and lower trim plates.
  4.  
  5. Remove the mounting screws; there are usually four screws.
  6.  
  7. Slide the radio rearward and disconnect the wiring and antenna lead.
  8.

  1. Remove the radio from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Raise the radio into position, then connect the wiring.
  2.  
  3. Install the radio mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the trim plates.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

1992-99 vehicles

See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. For 1992-93 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Unfasten the instrument panel-to-cluster trim panel screws. Tilt the trim plate rearward.
    2.  
    3. If equipped, detach the driver information display and rear defogger switch connectors.
    4.  
    5. Remove the trim plate.
    6.

  5. For 1994-99 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Open the instrument panel compartment door.
    2.  
    3. Remove the center trim plate assembly by remove the two fasteners and carefully pulling rearward.

  7. Remove the radio fasteners, then pull the radio rearward.
  8.  
  9. Detach the connectors and the antenna lead, then remove the radio from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. If replacing the radio, make sure to transfer the mounting brackets to the new radio
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the radio retainers to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).

Pontiac

1987-91 vehicles

See Figures 5 through 11

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel trim plate by carefully prying around the perimeter with a suitable tool.

  1. Detach the 2 wires from the cigar lighter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ashtray.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws from the upper radio mounting bracket.

  1. Unfasten the ashtray bracket and rear support bracket retainers.

  1. Use your fingers to depress the 2 instrument panel engagement tabs up through the access holes.
  2.

  1. Slide the radio partially out and detach the electrical connectors and antenna lead.

  1. Remove the radio from the vehicle.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Attach the wiring and antenna lead to the back of the radio.
  2.  
  3. Push the radio into the instrument panel until the tangs engage.
  4.  
  5. Install the retainers to the rear support brackets and ashtray brackets. Tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the radio upper mounting bracket retaining bolts/screws and tighten to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the ashtray, then attach the 2 wires to the lighter.
  10.  
  11. Place the trim plate in position, then push firmly to seat it in place.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

1992-99 vehicles

See Figure 12

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel trim plate by carefully prying it up. Pull the trim plate up, then rearward.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the radio-to-instrument panel retainers.
  6.  
  7. Pull the radio rearward and detach the electrical connector and antenna lead.
  8.  
  9. Remove the radio from the vehicle. If the radio is being replaced, make sure to transfer the rear mounting bracket to the new radio.

To install:
  1. Attach the radio lead and connectors to the rear of the radio.
  2.  
  3. Position the radio in the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the retaining fasteners and tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the trim plate, then connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
