Take great care with the plastic trim panels. Plastic trim panels are usually very hard plastic and extremely easy to crack. The following steps can be used to guide you through the removal and installation of the console unit, but you may need to alter steps to your needs on your specific vehicle.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Touring Design

See Figures 1 and 2

TRIM PLATE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle dial control, with the shifter in park. Lift up and move rearward to release the indicator from dial.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transaxle control indicator.
  6.  
  7. Remove the console compartment.
  8.  
  9. Remove the trim plate and sight shield screws.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fog lamp switch connector and the power seat switch connectors, if equipped.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Connect the fog light and seat switches.
  2.  
  3. Install the trim plate.
  4.  
  5. Install the console compartment.
  6.  
  7. Install the transaxle control indicator.
  8.  
  9. Install the transaxle control dial. The console trim plate, ashtray appliques and cup holder appliques are most likely serviced as a matched set.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

CONSOLE ASSEMBLY
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim plate, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten all necessary console fasteners, screws, nuts.
  6.  
  7. Tag and detach the necessary electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Carefully remove the console assembly from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. If the console is being replaced, transfer all brackets and other needed items to the new console.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Place the console in position.
  2.  
  3. Attach all electrical connectors, as tagged during removal. Install the console retaining nuts, screws and fasteners,
  4.  
  5. Install the trim plate, as outlined in this section.
  6.  

Sport Design

See Figure 3

BIN LID AND HINGE
  1. Remove the armrest bin lid.
  2.  
  3. Remove console vent assembly
  4.  
  5. Remove the console center trim; detach the trim and rotate up.
  6.  
  7. Remove the duct assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bezel/latch/cup holder assembly and unfasten the armrest bin lid hinge nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hinge.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the hinge and retaining nuts, then install the cup holder assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the duct assembly, by pulling it rearward into the proper position.
  4.  
  5. Install the console center trim plate; rotate it down into position and reattach.
  6.  
  7. Install the console vent assembly and bin lid.
  8.  

CENTER TRIM PLATE
  1. Unfasten the transaxle control lever handle retainer, then remove the handle from the shifter.
  2.  
  3. Open the lid and lift out the ash tray.
  4.  
  5. Remove the console trim plate by carefully prying it up.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the console center trim plate-to-transaxle cable bracket bolts.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the console trim plate up.
  10.  
  11. Detach the connectors, then disengage the console center trim plate pivot arms by squeezing arms together.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the console center trim plate further, then pull forward.
  14.  
  15. Remove the center trim plate.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the console center trim plate, install and rotate into position. Engage console center trim plate pivot arms to pins, squeeze pivot arms together, align with pins, snap into place.
  2.  
  3. Attach the electrical connectors, then install the console center trim plate-to-transaxle cable bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install the console trim plate; press the plate firmly until seated.
  6.  
  7. Install the ash tray.
  8.  
  9. Install the handle to shifter, align the slot to keyway on shifter, then install the handle retainer.
  10.

CONSOLE DUCT ASSEMBLY
  1. Remove the console vent assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower console.
  4.  
  5. Remove the armrest bin and cigar lighter.
  6.  
  7. Remove the center trim plate, as outlined in this Section.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the duct assembly to lower console screws.
  10.  
  11. Remove the duct assembly.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the duct assembly and secure with the duct-to-lower console screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the console center trim plate.
  4.  
  5. Install the cigar lighter and armrest bin.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower console.
  8.  
  9. Install the console vent assembly.
  10.  

CONSOLE VENT ASSEMBLY
  1. Disconnect the outlets and pull rearward from the knob.
  2.  
  3. When installing; connect and align pin with hole in flow diverting knob.
  4.  
  5. Align the outlet with pivot arm, then press firmly until seated.
  6.  

LOWER CONSOLE
  1. Remove the console center trim, detach and rotate upwards.
  2.  
  3. Remove the armrest bin trim plate; lift the tab to remove.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the lower console-to-transaxle cable bracket bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower console-to-transaxle control bolts.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the lower console to floor stud nuts.
  10.  
  11. Carefully remove the lower console from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Maneuver the lower console into position, aligning the tabs on the transaxle control with lower console.
  2.  
  3. Install the bracket and cable bolts, and the floor stud nuts.
  4.  
  5. Install the armrest bin lower trim plate and console trim plate.
  6.  

CONTROL LEVER HANDLE
  1. Unfasten the transaxle control lever handle retainer.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle control lever handle from shifter.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Install the transaxle control lever handle to shifter.
  2.  
  3. Align the slot in handle to keyway on shifter.
  4.  
  5. Install the transaxle control lever handle retainer.
  6.
