GM Buick/Oldsmobile/Pontiac/Full-Size 1975-1990 Repair Guide

Brake shoes contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.

The brakes are almost identical in design and operation to the front disc brakes, with the exception of the parking brake mechanism that is built into the rear brake calipers. When the parking brake is applied, the lever turns the actuator screw which is threaded into a nut in the piston assembly. This causes the piston to move outward and the caliper to slide inward mechanically, forcing the linings against the brake disc. The piston assembly contains a self-adjusting mechanism for the parking brake.
