Turn Signal Switch

WARNING
Do not atttempt to remove the steering wheel on cars equipped with an air bag. This service should be left to a professional service technician to avoid damage to the system and personal injury.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1 and 2

Models without Tilt and Telescopic Column
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel as described earlier.
  4.  
  5. Remove the covers from the steering column shaft. The plastic keepers under the cover are not necessary for installation.
  6.  
  7. Depress the lockplate and remove the snapring from the shaft. Remove the lock-plate and the canceling cam.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper bearing preload spring.
  10.  
  11. Place the turn signal lever in the right turn position, then remove the turn signal lever attaching screw and the lever. On 1978 and later models with the dimmer switch in the turn signal lever, remove the actuator arm screw and the arm.
  12.  
  13. Push in on the hazard warning knob, then remove the screw and the hazard warning knob.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three turn signal switch attaching screws.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower trim panel and then disconnect the turn signal connector from the wiring harness. Lift the connector from the mounting bracket on the right side of the jacket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the four bolts which attach the bracket assembly to the jacket.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the screw holding the shift indicator needle and disconnect the clip from the link.
  22.  
  23. Remove the two nuts from the column support bracket while holding the column in position. Remove the bracket assembly and wire protector from the wiring, then loosely install the bracket-to-support column.
  24.  
  25. Tape the turn signal wires at the connector, then carefully pull the turn signal switch and wiring from the top end of the column.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Use a new snapring. If the cover screws are to be replaced, make sure the replacement screws are the same size.
  2.  
  3. Untape the turn signal wires at the connector, then carefully push the turn signal switch and wiring into the top end of the column.
  4.  
  5. Install the two nuts from the column support bracket while holding the column in position. Install the bracket assembly and wire protector to the wiring.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the screw holding the shift indicator needle and connect the clip to the link.
  8.  
  9. Install the four bolts which attach the bracket assembly to the jacket.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower trim panel after connecting the turn signal connector to the wiring harness.
  12.  
  13. Install the three turn signal switch attaching screws.
  14.  
  15. Push in on the hazard warning knob, then install the screw and the hazard warning knob.
  16.  
  17. Place the turn signal lever in the right turn position, then install the turn signal lever attaching screw and the lever. On 1978 and later models with the dimmer switch in the turn signal lever, install the actuator arm screw and the arm.
  18.  
  19. Install the upper bearing preload spring.
  20.  
  21. Install the lock-plate and the canceling cam. Depress the lockplate and install the snapring to the shaft.
  22.  
  23. Install the covers to the steering column shaft. The plastic keepers under the cover are not necessary for installation.
  24.  
  25. Install the steering wheel and torque the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) as described earlier.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable and check all functions.
  28.  

Models with Tilt and Telescopic Column

CAUTION
All elements of energy-absorbing (telescopic) steering columns are very sensitive to damage. Do not strike any part of the column (nuts, bolts, etc.) as this could ruin the entire assembly.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel as outlined earlier.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cover from the steering column shaft.
  6.  
  7. Press down on the lockplate and pry the snapring from the shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lockplate and the canceling cam.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper bearing preload spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the turn signal lever and the hazard flasher knob.
  14.  
  15. Lift up on the tilt lever and position the housing in its central position.
  16.  
  17. Remove the switch attaching screws.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower trim cap from the instrument panel and disconnect the turn signal connector from the wiring harness.
  20.  
  21. Remove the four bolts which secure the bracket assembly to the jacket.
  22.  
  23. Loosen the screw that holds the shift indicator needle and disconnect the clip from the link.
  24.  
  25. Remove the two nuts from the column support bracket while holding the column in position. Remove the bracket assembly and wire protector from the wiring, then loosely install the support column bracket.
  26.  
  27. Tape the turn signal wires to the connector to keep them fit and parallel.
  28.  
  29. Carefully remove the turn signal switch and wiring from the column.
  30.  

To install:
  1. Carefully install the turn signal switch and wiring into the column.
  2.  
  3. Install the bracket assembly and wire protector to the wiring, then loosely install the support column bracket. Install the two nuts to the column support bracket while holding the column in position.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the screw that holds the shift indicator needle and connect the clip to the link.
  6.  
  7. Install the four bolts which secure the bracket assembly to the jacket.
  8.  
  9. Connect the turn signal connector to the wiring harness. Install the lower trim cap to the instrument panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the switch attaching screws.
  12.  
  13. Lift up on the tilt lever and position the housing in its central position.
  14.  
  15. Install the turn signal lever and the hazard flasher knob.
  16.  
  17. Install the upper bearing preload spring.
  18.  
  19. Install the lockplate and the canceling cam.
  20.  
  21. Press down on the lockplate and install the snapring to the shaft.
  22.  
  23. Install the cover to the steering column shaft.
  24.  
  25. Install the steering wheel as outlined earlier.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable and check all functions.
  28.
