Water Pump

The water pump is a die cast, centrifugal type with sealed bearings. Since it is pressed together, it must be serviced as a unit.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Except Diesel Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. If necessary, remove the fan shroud or the upper radiator support.
  4.  
  5. Remove the necessary drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fan and water pump pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator and the power steering pump (if equipped) brackets, then move the units aside.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater hose and the lower radiator hose from the pump.
  12.  
  13. Remove the water pump retaining bolts and the pump. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  14.  

Use an anti-seize compound on the water pump bolt threads.

To install:
  1. Use new gaskets and reverse the removal procedures. Torque the water pump, the alternator and the power steering (if equipped) mounting bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). Adjust the drive belts and fill the cooling system.

If a belt tensioning gauge is available, adjust the belts to 100-130 lbs. of tension on new belts or to 70 lbs. on used belts. If the gauge is not available, adjust the belts so that a1/4-1/2inch (6-13mm) deflection can be made on the longest span of the belt under moderate thumb pressure.

Diesel
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  2.  


CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, the heater hose and the by-pass hose from the water pump.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fan assembly, the drive belts and the water pump pulley.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator, the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor (if equipped) brackets, then move the units aside.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and the pump. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Use new gaskets, sealant and reverse the removal procedures. Torque the water pump bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Adjust the belts and refill the cooling system.
  2.  

Apply sealer to the lower water pump bolts.
