REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1967-72 Except Eldorado

See Figure 1

  1. Open the hood and disconnect the parking lamp wire connectors.
  2.  
  3. If the car is equipped with a lamp monitoring system, it will have a wire at each lamp assembly that must be disconnected before the bumper can be removed.
  4.  
  5. Safely raise the front end of the car.
  6.  

Place a piece of masking tape on the lower edge of the front fender side marker lamp and between the headlamps. Tape the comparable bumper areas. Draw horizontal and vertical crossed lines on each piece of tape. Measure and record the distance between each of the four horizontal line points for reinstallation.

  1. Position a hydraulic jack so as to support the bumper assembly at the outer ends.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut, lockwasher, flat washer and bolt securing the air deflector to the rear outer bumper ends.
  4.  
  5. Remove the three nuts, flat washers, and bolts on each side, securing the bumper outer mounting brackets to the frame.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two nuts, flat washers, and bolts on each side, securing the bumper center mounting brackets to the frame front cross member and lower the bumper slightly to remove the center air deflector fasteners to bumper brackets.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front bumper.
  10.  

To install:
  1. With the aid of a helper position the bumper on a jack and place into position. Loosely install the retaining bracket bolts, washers and nuts. Align the bumper and tighten the nuts. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.

1973-89 Except Eldorado and Seville

  1. Support the bumpers at the center with a hydraulic jack.
  2.  
  3. On some earlier models equipped with Guide-Matic, remove the two screws securing the photosensor bellows to the left side of the upper grille and disconnects the bellows.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the retainers securing the air deflector to the lower main reinforcement.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the nut above and below the reinforcement bracket to relieve tension.
  8.  
  9. Remove the one bolt, washer, grommet and sleeve securing the restrictor rod to the radiator support.
  10.  

Before proceeding, count the number of shims used between the bumper and the energy absorber unit.

  1. Remove the 4 nuts on each side securing the bumper to the energy unit and remove the bumper.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  4.

1967-72 Eldorado

  1. Safely raise the front end of the car.
  2.  
  3. Scribe alignment marks between the frame and the mounting brackets to aid during installation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two retainers, securing the air deflectors to the mounting brackets.
  6.  
  7. Remove the eight bracket to frame nuts and washers. Leave the two outer bolts in to support the bumper and remove the six bolts.
  8.  
  9. Place a hydraulic jack under the bumper center section and lift the bumper until the remaining two bolts can be removed.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts and lower the bumper from the car.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal.

1973-85 Eldorado And 1976-85 Seville

See Figures 5 and 6

  1. Support the bumper in the center with a hydraulic jack.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retainers securing the air deflector to the main reinforcement.
  4.  

Before proceeding, count the number of shims used between the bumper and the energy absorber unit.

  1. Remove the 4 nuts on each side securing the bumper to the energy unit and remove the bumper.
  2.  
  3. On the 1973-78 Eldorado and the 1980-85 Seville, remove the nuts, retainers and cushions, both sides, securing the restrictor rods (bumper jacking brace) to the bumper.
  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  6.

1986-89 Eldorado

See Figures 7 and 8

  1. Remove the 8 lower fascia retainers and the 4 outer bolts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws securing the fascia to the fender brace.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 front inner wheelhouse panel to bumper fascia screws.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the park and signal lamp harness from the lamp housings.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the fiber optic connector from the signal lamp housings.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the cornering lamp harness from the lamp housings.
  12.  
  13. Remove the outer fascia moulding.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cornering lamp.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 2 fascia support to fender screws.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 8 plate to absorber nuts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the impact bar and fascia as one unit.
  22.  
  23. Disassemble the impact bar as necessary.
  24.  
  25. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the bumper guard retaining bolts to 21 ft. lbs (28 Nm) and the 8 impact bar plate to absorber nuts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

1986-89 Seville
  1. Remove the 8 lower fascia retainers and the 4 outer bolts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws securing the fascia to the fender brace.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 front inner wheelhouse panel to bumper fascia screws.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the park and signal lamp harness from the lamp housings.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the fiber optic connector from the signal lamp housings.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 fascia support to fender screws.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 8 plate to absorber nuts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the impact bar and fascia as one unit.
  16.  
  17. Disassemble the impact bar as necessary.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the bumper guard retaining bolts to 21 ft. lbs (28 Nm) and the 8 impact bar plate to absorber nuts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
