REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1967-72 All Models

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Safely raise the rear end of the car.
  2.  
  3. Open the rear luggage compartment.
  4.  
  5. Position a hydraulic jack to support the bumper assembly.
  6.  
  7. Through the license opening, disconnect the bumper wiring harness connector from the body end panel connector.
  8.  
  9. If the car is equipped with lamp monitor system, there will be a wire connector at each lamp assembly that must be disconnected before the bumper can be removed.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts, nuts and washers on both sides securing the lower mounting bar to the frame.
  12.  
  13. If necessary remove the luggage compartment trim.
  14.  
  15. Through the rear end panel luggage compartment, remove the nut, flat washer and rubber cushion on both sides securing the upper end bar to the body.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bumper assembly by pulling rearward.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of removal.

1973-89 Except Eldorado and Seville

See Figures 3, 4 and 5

  1. Scribe alignment marks on the bumper at the energy absorber unit.
  2.  
  3. Support the bumper at the center with a hydraulic jack.
  4.  
  5. Count the number of shims, if used, on each side, then remove the bumper attaching bolts.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect all tail lamp connectors and remove the bumper.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  10.

1973-85 Eldorado And 1976-85 Seville

See Figure 6

  1. Scribe alignment marks on the bumper at the energy absorber unit.
  2.  
  3. Support the bumper at the center with a hydraulic jack.
  4.  
  5. Count the number of shims, if used, on each side, then remove the bumper attaching bolts.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect all tail lamp connectors and remove the bumper.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal.

1986-89 Eldorado and Seville

See Figure 7

  1. Open the rear compartment lid.
  2.  
  3. Pull back the trunk trunk carpet to expose the four quarter panel to fascia plate nuts.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the car.
  6.  
  7. On the Eldorado, disconnect the side marker lamp harness.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower fascia.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower three screws from the wheelhouse opening moulding to fascia.
  12.  
  13. Remove the eight energy absorber to impact bar nuts and remove the bumper.
  14.  
  15. Disassemble the bumper as necessary.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the eight impact bar to energy absorber nuts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
