Evaporator Core and Expansion Valve

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1967-70 All Models
  1. Remove the carburetor air cleaner.
  2.  
  3. Purge the system of refrigerant. Refer to Routine Maintenance
  4.  
  5. Remove the blower motor assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the high pressure liquid line at the expansion valve. Cover openings immediately.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the low pressure vapor line at the suction throttling valve. Cover the openings immediately.
  10.  
  11. Take off the vacuum hoses from the retaining clips and move the hoses toward the engine.
  12.  
  13. Take off the horseshoe clip holding the water control valve to the mounting bracket and place the water control valve with the hoses attached on the engine.
  14.  
  15. Remove the six screws and nut (five on Eldorado), securing the heater-air selector assembly to the cowl.
  16.  
  17. Unfasten out the transmission dipstick.
  18.  
  19. Remove the screws and nut retaining the blower evaporator assembly to the cowl.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect any wires and hoses, then lift out the blower evaporator assembly through the engine compartment.
  22.  
  23. Remove the suction throttling valve.
  24.  
  25. Remove the expansion valve.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four screws holding the front and rear sections of the blower evaporator case together.
  28.  
  29. Take the evaporator inlet pipe shield lower left screw.
  30.  
  31. Remove the front section of the blower evaporator case.
  32.  
  33. Take out the two screws holding the evaporator core to the rear section of the case.
  34.  
  35. Lift out the evaporator core.
  36.  

To install:
  1. Reposition the evaporator core and install the two screws holding the evaporator core to the rear section of the case.
  2.  
  3. Install the front section of the blower evaporator case.
  4.  
  5. Install the evaporator inlet pipe shield lower left screw.
  6.  
  7. Install the four screws holding the front and rear sections of the blower evaporator case together.
  8.  
  9. Install the expansion valve.
  10.  
  11. Install the suction throttling valve.
  12.  
  13. Install the blower evaporator assembly through the engine compartment, then disconnect any wires and hoses.
  14.  
  15. Install the screws and nut retaining the blower evaporator assembly to the cowl.
  16.  
  17. Install the transmission dipstick.
  18.  
  19. Install the six screws and nut (five on Eldorado), securing the heater-air selector assembly to the cowl.
  20.  
  21. Install the horseshoe clip holding the water control valve to the mounting bracket and place the water control valve with the hoses attached on the engine.
  22.  
  23. Install the vacuum hoses and retaining clips.
  24.  
  25. Connect the low pressure vapor line at the suction throttling valve.
  26.  
  27. Connect the high pressure liquid line at the expansion valve.
  28.  
  29. Install the blower motor assembly.
  30.  
  31. Charge the system with refrigerant.
  32.  
  33. Install the carburetor air cleaner.
  34.  

1971-72
  1. Purge the system of refrigerant. Refer to Routine Maintenance .
  2.  
  3. Remove the electrical connections from the ambient sensor and both blower relays.
  4.  
  5. On all except Eldorado, support the front of the hood and tape a pad to the right hand rear corner.
  6.  
  7. On all except Eldorado, remove the right hand hood hinge.
  8.  
  9. Remove the high pressure line from the expansion valve and move out of the way.
  10.  
  11. Remove the low pressure line from the P.O.A. valve and position out of the way.
  12.  
  13. Remove the Right Hand (RH) tie strut at the wheel house and position out of the way.
  14.  
  15. Remove the one nut and five screws securing the evaporator case to the cowl.
  16.  
  17. Remove the four screw securing the evaporator case to the air inlet and separate from the air inlet.
  18.  
  19. Remove the evaporator case and air inlet.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the line between the expansion valve and the P.O.A. valve.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the line from the bottom of the expansion valve.
  24.  
  25. Remove the six screws holding the case halves together.
  26.  
  27. Slide the evaporator core out of the case.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Slide the evaporator core into the case.
  2.  
  3. Install the six screws holding the case halves together.
  4.  
  5. Connect the line to the bottom of the expansion valve.
  6.  
  7. Connect the line between the expansion valve and the P.O.A. valve.
  8.  
  9. Install the four screws securing the evaporator case to the air inlet, then install the one nut and five screws securing the evaporator case to the cowl.
  10.  
  11. Install the RH tie strut at the wheel house.
  12.  
  13. Install the low pressure line to the P.O.A. valve.
  14.  
  15. Install the high pressure line to the expansion valve.
  16.  
  17. On all except Eldorado, install the right hand hood hinge.
  18.  
  19. Install the electrical connections to the ambient sensor and both blower relays.
  20.  
  21. Charge the system.
  22.  

1973-78
  1. Purge the system of refrigerant. Refer to Routine Maintenance .
  2.  
  3. Remove the electrical connections from the ambient sensor, ambient switch, thermal limiter fuse and auto blower relays.
  4.  
  5. Route the harness out from behind EEVIR assembly and position out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ALC compressor hoses and remove the hoses from behind the EEVIR assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the blower motor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the antenna lead-in cable.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ALC compressor by removing the three screws accessible in the wheel opening.
  14.  
  15. On some models it may be necessary to remove the brace between the cowl and the wheelhouse at the bottom near frame by removing the three screws at the wheelhouse and two at the cowl.
  16.  
  17. Remove the high and low pressure lines from the EEVIR assembly and position out of the way. Plug and seal all openings.
  18.  
  19. On some models it may be necessary to remove the Right Hand (RH) tie-strut at the wheelhouse and position out of the way.
  20.  
  21. Remove the two nuts and four screws securing the evaporator case to the cowl.
  22.  
  23. Remove the evaporator case from the cowl.
  24.  
  25. Remove the six screws holding the case halves together.
  26.  
  27. Remove the case half and remove the core from the case.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Slide the evaporator core into the case.
  2.  
  3. Install the six screws holding the case halves together.
  4.  
  5. Install the evaporator case to the cowl with the two nuts and four screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the RH tie strut at the wheel house.
  8.  
  9. Install the high and low pressure lines to the EEVIR assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the brace between the cowl and the wheelhouse at the bottom near frame by installing the three screws at the wheelhouse and two at the cowl.
  12.  
  13. Install the ALC compressor with the three retaining screws.
  14.  
  15. Install the antenna lead-in cable.
  16.  
  17. Install the blower motor.
  18.  
  19. Connect the ALC compressor hoses and install the hoses behind the EEVIR assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install the electrical connections to the ambient sensor, ambient switch, thermal limiter fuse and auto blower relays.
  22.  
  23. Charge the system.
  24.  

1979-89 Deville and Brougham
  1. Discharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Routine Maintenance .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the blower motor, compressor cycling switch, power module and radio lead-in connections. Position the wiring harness out of the way.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws on the compressor cycling switch. Remove the insulation, loosen the two hose clamps and remove the cycling switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right hand windshield washer nozzle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the three screws to the secondary inlet screen.
  10.  
  11. Partially remove the rubber moulding above the plenum (one screw on the RH side).
  12.  
  13. Remove the remaining screws and remove the primary inlet screen.
  14.  
  15. Remove the blower motor.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the evaporator to accumulator connection at the top of the accumulator.
  18.  

Plug or seal all refrigeration system connections immediately to prevent entry of dirt and moisture into the system.

  1. Remove the one screw and partially remove the accumulator bracket.
  2.  
  3. Remove all the screws from the top of the evaporator case cover and remove the cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the condenser to evaporator connection.
  6.  
  7. Remove the evaporator core by lifting straight up and out of the air conditioning module.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the evaporator core into the air conditioning module.
  2.  
  3. Connect the condenser to evaporator connection.
  4.  
  5. Install all the screws to the top of the evaporator case cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the one screw and install the accumulator bracket.
  8.  
  9. Connect the evaporator to accumulator the top of the accumulator.
  10.  
  11. Install the blower motor.
  12.  
  13. Install the primary inlet screen.
  14.  
  15. Install the three screws to the secondary inlet screen.
  16.  
  17. Install the right hand windshield washer nozzle.
  18.  
  19. Install the two screws on the compressor cycling switch. Install the insulation, tighten the two hose clamps.
  20.  
  21. Connect the electrical connectors to the blower motor, compressor cycling switch, power module and radio lead-in connections.
  22.  
  23. Evacuate and charge the refrigerant system. Leak test all connections.
  24.  

1979-89 Eldorado And Seville
  1. Discharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Routine Maintenance .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the compressor cycling switch, power module. Position the wiring harness out of the way.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws on the compressor cycling switch. Remove the insulation, loosen the two hose clamps and remove the cycling switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accumulator.
  8.  

Plug or seal all refrigeration system connections immediately to prevent entry of dirt and moisture into the system.

  1. Remove the insulation from the connection of the capillary line and the evaporator inlet pipe. Note location for of line for installation.
  2.  
  3. Remove the six screws securing the heater and air conditioning module cover left half to the right half.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two nuts securing the cover to the cowl.
  6.  
  7. Remove the condenser to the evaporator pipe connection.
  8.  
  9. Remove the black ground wire from the case cover to the case ground strap.
  10.  
  11. Remove the evaporator core.
  12.  
  13. To install reverse the removal procedure, noting the following:
  14.  
  15. Position the evaporator core in the case and connect the accumulator using new O-rings.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the sealer at the cowl junction and reseal as required.
  18.  
  19. Install the six screws securing the heater and air conditioning module cover left half to the cowl.
  20.  
  21. Position each hose clamp so that its width covers the capillary line and tighten the lines to 20 in. lbs. (2 Nm). Both rows of the capillary line must rest firmly against the clean pipe.
  22.  
  23. Evacuate and charge the refrigerant system. Leak test all connections.
  24.
