Heater Core Without Air Conditioning

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1967-71 All Models
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connection to the blower motor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the blower motor mounting screws and remove the blower.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater hoses from the fittings, leaving the clamps on the fittings.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the cable to the temperature valve at the pivot assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screws holding the bottom of the heater assembly to the cowl.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screws holding the top of the heater assembly to the cowl, then remove the assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screws from each side of the heater core, securing the wire retaining clamps to the blower case, then remove the clamps.
  16.  
  17. Pull the core out of the case and remove the grommets from the inlet and outlet fitting.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Install the grommets and reposition the core into the case.
  2.  
  3. Install the screws to the on each side of the heater core and secure the wire to the blower case with the clamps.
  4.  
  5. Install the screws holding the top and bottom of the heater assembly to the cowl.
  6.  
  7. Connect the cable to the temperature valve at the pivot assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the heater hoses to the fittings.
  10.  
  11. Install the blower motor mounting screws and wire connection.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system.
  14.  


CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

1972-76 All Models
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heater hoses from the core nipples. Plug the core nipples.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel top cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws, then position the center ventilator duct and sleeve out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Remove the vacuum hoses from the diverter door and the defroster door vacuum actuators.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the bowden cable from the temperature door and case, then move it out of the way.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screws securing the heater case to the cowl.
  14.  
  15. Work the heater case from its position under the instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the screws and clips securing the core to the heater case and lift out the core.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Install the grommets and reposition the core into the case.
  2.  
  3. Install the screws securing the heater case to the cowl.
  4.  
  5. Fasten the bowden cable to the temperature door and case.
  6.  
  7. Install the vacuum hoses to the diverter door and the defroster door vacuum actuators.
  8.  
  9. Install the center ventilator duct and sleeve with the retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Install the instrument panel top cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the heater hoses from the core nipples.
  14.  
  15. Fill the cooling system
  16.
