The vehicle identification number (VIN) is important in ordering parts and for servicing. The 1967-70 models used an eight digit Vehicle Identification Number. The 1971-80 models used a thirteen digit (VIN) number and the 1981 and later models use a seventeen digit (VIN) number. All (VIN) plates are attached to the cowl bar in the lower left hand corner of the windshield where it is visible from outside the car.

Model years appear in the VIN as the last digit of each particular year (6 is 1976, 8 is 1978, etc.), until 1980 (which is A). This is the final year under the thirteen digit code. The seventeen digit VIN begins with 1981 (B), and continues 1982 (C), 1983 (D) ...with the exception of any letter which might be mistaken for a number such as I or O, which are skipped.
