Standard Column
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.
  5. Insert a thin screwdriver into the lockplate and remove the lockplate cover assembly.
  6.
  7. Install a spring compressor onto the steering shaft. Tighten the tool to compress the lockplate and the spring. Remove the snapring from the groove in the shaft.
  8.

CAUTION
When the snapring is removed do not allow the shaft to slide out the bottom of the column!

  1. Remove the lockplate, then slide the turn signal cam along with the upper bearing preload spring and the thrust washer off the upper steering shaft.
  2.
  3. Remove the steering column lower cover.
  4.
  5. Unscrew the turn signal lever and remove it from the column.
  6.
  7. On cars with cruise control:
    1. Disconnect the cruise control wire from the harness near the bottom of the column.
    2.
    3. Remove the harness protector from the cruise control wire.
    4.
    5. Remove the turn signal lever. Do not remove the wire from the column.
    6.

  8.
  9. Remove the two vertical bolts at the steering column upper support. Remove the shim packs. Keep the shims in order for reinstallation.
  10.
  11. Remove the four screws securing the column upper mounting bracket to the column and remove the bracket.
  12.
  13. Disconnect the turn signal wiring and remove the wires from the plastic protector.
  14.
  15. Remove the turn signal switch mounting screws.
  16.
  17. Slide the switch connector out of the bracket on the steering column.
  18.
  19. If the switch is known to be bad, cut the wires and discard the switch. Tape the connector of the new switch to the old wires, and pull the new harness down through the steering column while removing the old wires.
  20.
  21. If the original switch is to be reused, wrap the tape around the wire and connector, then pull the harness up through the column. It may be helpful to attach a length of wire or string to the harness connector before pulling it up through the column to facilitate installation.
  22.
  23. After freeing the switch wiring protector from its mounting, pull the turn signal switch straight up and remove the switch, switch harness, and the connector from the column.
  24.

To install:
  1. Install the turn signal switch, feeding the harness, connector and harness protector down through the housing.
  2.
  3. Position the turn signal switch in the neutral position and install the three screws securing the switch to the upper housing.
  4.
  5. On cars equipped with cruise control perform the following:
    1. Connect the cruise control harness to piano wire or equivalent, and feed the harness into the turn signal lever opening. Gently pull the wire and feed the harness through the steering column into position.
    2.
    3. Remove the tape from the turn signal wire harness.
    4.
    5. Remove the piano wire from the harness connector.
    6.
    7. Position the turn signal lever on the turn signal switch and install the one screw.
    8.

  6.
  7. Position the turn signal switch wiring protector over the upper bracket mounting boss on the upper steering column.
  8.
  9. Position the steering column upper mounting bracket over the turn signal wiring harness protector and secure the bracket to the column with the four screws.
  10.
  11. Install the turn signal switch connector in the bracket on the steering column upper jacket.
  12.
  13. Install the hazard warning switch knob.
  14.
  15. Install the thrust washer on the steering shaft.
  16.
  17. Install the upper bearing preload spring and turn signal canceling cam.
  18.
  19. Install the lock plate with the large flat on the plate aligned with the large flat on the steering shaft.
  20.
  21. Place a new snapring on the upper end of the steering shaft.
  22.
  23. Install a spring compressor J-23131, on the steering shaft.
  24.
  25. Compress the lock plate and spring. Next slide the new snapring down until the ring locks in the groove in the upper end of the shaft. Remove the spring compressor tool.
  26.
  27. Position the plastic lock ring cover on the upper end of the shaft and snap the three fingers over the lock plate assembly. Turn the shaft to make certain the cover does not contact the upper housing assembly. Install the shift lever.
  28.
  29. Install the steering wheel.
  30.
  31. Install the steering column.

Fig. Fig. 1: Removing the C-ring

Tilt and Telescopic Columns
  1. Disconnect the battery and remove the steering wheel.
  2.
  3. Remove the rubber sleeve bumper from the steering shaft.
  4.
  5. Remove the plastic retainer with a screwdriver, disengaging the tabs on the retainer from the C-ring.
  6.
  7. Compress the upper steering shaft pre-load spring with a spring compressor and remove the C-ring. When installing the spring compressor, pull the upper shaft up about 1 in. (25mm) and turn the ignition to the LOCK position to hold the shaft in place.
  8.
  9. Remove the spring compressor, then remove the upper steering shaft lock plate, horn contact carrier and the preload spring.
  10.
  11. Remove the steering column lower cover.
  12.
  13. Unscrew and remove the turn signal lever. If equipped with cruise control:
    1. Disconnect the cruise control wire from the harness near the bottom of the steering column.
    2.
    3. Slide the protector off the cruise control wire. On 1977 and later models, remove the lever attaching screw and carefully pull the lever out enough to allow the removal of the turn signal switch.
    4.

  14.
  15. Remove the two nuts and shim packs from the upper column support. Keep the shims together as a unit for reinstallation.
  16.
  17. Remove the bracket from the steering column by removing the two attaching screws from each side.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the turn signal wiring harness from the car harness and remove the wires from the plastic protector.
  20.
  21. Remove the turn signal switch retaining screws and pull the switch up out of the steering column.
  22.
  23. If the switch is to be replaced, cut the wires from the switch and tape the new switch connector to the old wires. Carefully pull the new harness down through the column as the old wires are removed.
  24.
  25. If the old switch is to be reused, tape the connector to the wires and carefully pull the harness up out of the column.
  26.

To install:
  1. Feed the wiring harness down through the steering column to replace the old switch.
  2.
  3. Secure the switch in the steering column.
  4.
  5. Install the upper shaft preload spring.
  6.
  7. Install the lock plate and carrier assembly. Make sure that the flat on the lower end of the steering shaft is pointing up and that the small plastic tab on the carrier is up or nearest the top of the column. The flat surface of the lock plate must be installed facing down against the turn signal switch.
  8.
  9. Install the spring compressor, depress the preload spring and lock plate, then install the C-ring with the wide side toward the keyway.
  10.
  11. Remove the spring compressor and install the plastic retainer on the C-ring.
  12.
  13. Install the rubber sleeve bumper over the steering shaft and install the steering wheel.
  14.
  15. Install the turn signal lever. If the vehicle is equipped with cruise control: On 1977 and later models, secure the lever to the switch with the retaining screw and install the wiring harness.
  16.
  17. Remove the tape from the end of the harness, then connect the switch and cruise control, if so equipped, to the car harness.
  18.
  19. Cover both harnesses with the plastic protector and position it to the column. The turn signal connector slides on the tabs of the column.
  20.
  21. Position the steering column upper bracket over the turn signal switch harness plastic protector.
  22.
  23. Install the mounting bracket nuts and shims in their original positions.
  24.
  25. Install the steering column lower cover.
