Neutral Safety Switch

NOTE
The neutral safety switch incorporates the back-up light switch.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



4T60 and 4T60-E Transaxles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. On 1992-93 Eldorado and Seville, remove the air cleaner housing and duct.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shift linkage, electrical connector and vacuum hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the attaching nut and the shift lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel line bracket and bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the retaining bolts and the switch.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Adjust the switch and tighten the retaining bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

4T80-E Transaxle
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner duct and housing.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control cable at the lever on the transaxle manual shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control cable bracket and cable on the transaxle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retaining nut and transaxle manual shaft lever.
  10.  
  11. Detach the electrical connector and hose.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining bolts and the neutral safety switch.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Adjust the switch and tighten the retaining bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Tighten the manual shaft lever retaining nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

CAUTION
The neutral safety switch must be adjusted so that the engine will start in PARK or NEUTRAL only. Personal injury may result if the engine can be started in a drive position.

  1. Loosen the neutral safety switch retaining bolts.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the transaxle manual shaft to the NEUTRAL position.
  4.  
  5. Rotate the switch until a 3 / 32 in. (2.34 mm) gauge pin can be inserted in the adjustment hole.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the switch retaining bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) on 4T60 and 4T60-E transaxles or 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm) on 4T80-E transaxle.
