NOTE
Special tool J 41545 may be required to perform this procedure.

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Set the gear selector to the neutral N .
  4.  
  5. Remove the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cable and the lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the park/neutral position switch.

To install:

  1. Verify that the transmission still is in the neutral N position. If the position has moved, rotate the shaft clockwise from park P through reverse R into neutral N . Be careful not to damage the shaft flats, corners, or threads.

    New replacement park/neutral position switches already are pinned in the neutral N position.
     
    When installing a park/neutral position switch with a sheared pin, insert the alignment tool into the 2 slots on the switch in the area of the transmission shaft.
     
    Rotate the tool until rear leg on the tool falls into the slot on the switch near the hose.
     
    Verify that the tool is seated properly in all 3 slots.
     
    Remove the tool.

  3. Check for a cracked carrier if either of the following conditions exist:
    1. The pin is sheared.
    2.  
    3. You are installing the original switch.

To install:


NOTE
After the park/neutral switch installation, verify that the engine starts only in P or N . If the engine starts in any other position, readjust the park/neutral position switch.


NOTE
Check the shifter for normal freedom of movement.

  1. Install the park/neutral position switch.
    1. Align the flats in the park/neutral position switch with the transmission manual shaft flats.
    2.  
    3. Press the park/neutral position switch onto the shaft. Fully seat the switch against the transmission.

  3. Install the bolts loosely.
  4.  
  5. With the alignment tool, verify the alignment of the switch before tightening the bolts.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the alignment tool.
  10.  
  11. Install the cable and the lever.
  12.  
  13. Install the linkage retaining nut and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Attach the electrical connectors.
