Power Brake Booster

Print

The power brake booster is a tandem vacuum suspended unit. In a normal operating mode, with the service brakes in the released position, the tandem vacuum suspended booster operates with vacuum on both sides of its diaphragms. When the brakes are applied, air at atmospheric pressure is admitted to one side of each diaphragm to provide the power assist. When the brakes are released, the atmospheric air is shut off from one side of each diaphragm. The air is then drawn from the booster through the power brake booster vacuum check valve to the vacuum source. The internal components of the booster are non-serviceable and non-interchangeable.

  8.
  9. Remove the master cylinder seal from the brake master cylinder.
  10.
  11. Unplug the power brake booster vacuum hose from the power brake booster.
  12.
  13. Disconnect the driver's side front floor air outlet duct.
  14.
  15. Pull the brake pedal pivot pin retainer from the brake pedal pivot pin.
  16.

  18.

NOTE
Do not disturb the clevis adjustment on the pushrod unless replacing the power brake booster.

  1. Pull the master cylinder pushrod clevis from the brake pedal.
  2.
  3. Unscrew the fuse and relay panel and position out of the way.
  4.
  5. Remove the brake pedal bracket nuts
  6.
  7. Pull the power brake booster with the gasket (to dash) from the bulkhead.
  8.
  9. Remove the clevis and power brake booster pushrod nut.
  10.

To install:

  1. Install the clevis and adjusting nut to the new booster.
    1. Adjust the clevis on the pushrod to 4.2 inches +/- 0.2 inches (106 mm +/- 0.5 mm), then tighten the adjusting nut.
    2.

  2.
  3. Install the power brake booster gasket to the booster.
  4.
  5. Install the support bracket washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.
  7. Position the power brake booster gasket (to dash) over the studs on the bracket.
    1. The mounting surface must be free of any sealant or other foreign material.
    2.

  8.
  9. Attach the booster to the bulkhead. And tighten the bracket nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  10.
  11. Reposition the fuse and relay panels and install the screws.
  12.
  13. Install the master cylinder pushrod clevis to the brake pedal.
  14.

  18.
  19. Plug the power brake booster vacuum hose into the power brake booster.
  20.
  21. Install the master cylinder.
  22.
  23. Return the power steering reservoir bracket to its original mounting and secure it by tightening the bolt to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  24.
  25. Attact the A/C evaporator line extension to the cowl.
  26.
  27. Install the windshield wiper transmission.
  28.
  29. Bleed the brake system.

  4.
  5. Remove the master cylinder mounting nuts. Remove the master cylinder from the booster without disconnecting the brake lines.
  6.

NOTE
Move the master cylinder forward just enough to clear the studs on the booster. This will flex the brake lines slightly; be careful not to bend or distort the brake lines.

  1. Working under the instrument panel, remove the acoustical barrier from the booster studs, if equipped.
  2.
  3. Remove the booster mounting nuts.
  4.
  5. Disengage the booster pushrod from the brake pedal. Tilt the entire booster slightly to work the pushrod off the pedal clevis pin without putting unnecessary side pressure on the pushrod.
  6.
  7. Remove the booster assembly from the vehicle. Remove the gasket if necessary.
  8.

To install:

  1. If necessary, install the gasket to the booster.
  2.
  3. Position the booster in the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Connect the booster pushrod to the brake pedal. Tilt the entire booster slightly to work the pushrod onto the pedal clevis pin without putting unnecessary side pressure on the pushrod.
  6.
