Ignition Module

Print

The HEI module, acting as an electronic ON/OFF switch controls the current flow in the primary winding of the ignition coil. This switching action induces a high voltage in the ignition coil secondary winding which is directed through the rotor and secondary leads to fire the spark plugs.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

NOTE
It is not necessary to remove the distributor from the car.

  1. Remove the distributor cap.
  2.
  3. Remove the rotor.
  4.
  5. Remove the module attaching screws, and then carefully lift the stamped sheet metal shield and the module up and out of the distributor.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the leads from the module. Be careful and observe the color code on the leads as this must not be interchanged.
  8.

NOTE
Do not wipe the grease from the module for the distributor base if the same module is to be replaced. If a new module is to be installed, a package of silicone grease will be included with it. Spread the grease on the metal face of the module and on the distributor base where the module seats. This grease is necessary for module cooling.

To install:

  1. Connect the leads to the module. Maintain the color code observed in the procedure for removal.
  2.
  3. Install the module shield and module to the distributor using the attaching screws.
