REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.0L Engine

NOTE
For Camshaft removal, follow the procedure given for removal of the head gasket for that side of the engine.

4.5L and 4.9L Engines

NOTE
Valve lifters and pushrods should be kept in order so they can be reinstalled in their original position. Some engines will have both standard size 0.010 inch (0.25 mm) and oversize valve lifters as original equipment. The oversize lifters are etched with an O on their sides; the cylinder block will also be marked with an O if the oversize lifter is used.

  1. Remove the intake manifold and gasket.
  2.
  3. Remove the valve covers, rocker arm assemblies and pushrods.
  4.
  5. If the lifters are coated with varnish, apply carburetor cleaning solvent to the lifter body. The solvent should dissolve the varnish in about 10 minutes.
  6.
  7. Remove the lifters. A special tool for removing lifters is available, and is helpful for this procedure.
  8.

To install:

NOTE
New lifters must be primed before installation, as dry lifters will seize when the engine is started. Submerge the lifters in SAE 10 oil, which is very thin. Carefully insert the end of a 1 / 8 inch (3 mm) drift into the lifter and push down on the plunger. Hold the plunger down while the lifter is still submerged; do not pump the plunger. Release the plunger. The lifter is now primed.

  1. Coat the bottoms of the lifters, and the rollers with Molykote® or an equivalent molybdenum-disulfide lubricant before installation. Install the lifters and pushrods into the engine in their original order.
  2.
  3. Install the intake manifold gaskets and manifold.
  4.
  5. Position the rocker arms, pivots and bolts on the cylinder head. Position and install the rockers and rocker shaft.
  6.
  7. Install the valve covers, connect the spark plug wires, and install the air cleaner assembly.
  8.

NOTE
An additive containing EP lube, such as EOS, should always be added to crankcase oil for break-in when new lifters or a new camshaft is installed. This additive is generally available in automotive parts stores.

4.6L Engine
  1. Remove the camshaft cover.
  2.
  3. Remove the camshafts for the head being worked on.
  4.
  5. Remove the valve lifters in order, and store on their camshaft face so that the residual oil is retained.
  6.

NOTE
Retain the lifters in order so that they can be reinstalled in their original bores.

To install:

  1. Install the valve lifters in their original bores.
  2.
  3. Install the camshafts.
  4.
  5. Install the camshaft cover.
  6.
