Crankshaft Damper

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and remove the resonance chamber, as described earlier.
  4.  
  5. Remove the serpentine belt.
  6.  
  7. The A/C compressor hose support strap bolt must be removed from the AIR injection crossover bracket to ease in the removal of the crankshaft damper (harmonic balancer).
  8.  
  9. Remove the harmonic balancer (crankshaft damper) bolts, and the balancer from the drive gear.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the harmonic balancer bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the A/C compressor hose support strap to the AIR injection crossover bracket and fasten it with the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Replace the serpentine belt.
  6.  
  7. Install the resonance chamber, as described earlier.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

4.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine belt.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front wheel and tire.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front air deflector.
  10.  
  11. Support the body of the car and the right side of the engine cradle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right side cradle body bolts and lower the right side of the cradle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt and washer.
  16.  
  17. Install a puller and remove the damper.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the bore of the hub and seal with EP lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Position the damper on the crankshaft lining up the key slot in the hub with the key on the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Use installer J 29774 or equivalent, and bottom the hub out on the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft damper bolt and washer and tighten to 60 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Raise the right side of the cradle.
  10.  


NOTE
Position the ball joint to the steering knuckle while raising.

  1. Support the body of the car and the right side of the engine cradle.
  2.  
  3. Install the right side engine cradle body bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install the right front air deflector.
  6.  
  7. Install the right front wheel and tire.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

4.9L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine belt.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front wheel and tire.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front air deflector.
  10.  
  11. Loosen and reposition the heater by-pass line.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt and washer.
  14.  
  15. Install a puller and remove the damper.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the bore of the hub and seal with EP lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Position the damper on the crankshaft lining up the key slot in the hub with the key on the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Use installer J 29774 or equivalent, and bottom the hub out on the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft damper bolt and washer and tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the right front air deflector.
  10.  
  11. Install the right front wheel and tire.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.

4.6L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Release tension from the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle, remove the right front wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the splash shields from the wheelhouse and remove the brace between the oil pan and the transmission case.
  8.  
  9. Support the engine cradle and remove the 3 bolts from the right side of the cradle.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the RSS sensor from the right lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. Install the flywheel holder tool J 39411 or equivalent and remove the balancer bolt.
  14.  
  15. Lower the engine cradle enough for clearance of puller tool.
  16.  
  17. Install pilot tool J39344-2 into the end of the crankshaft.
  18.  
  19. Remove the harmonic balancer using puller tool J38416 or equivalent.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Position the balancer to the crankshaft and using tool J39344 or equivalent, install the balancer.
  2.  
  3. Clean the balancer bolts threads and apply oil to the threads. Tighten the balancer bolt to 105 ft. lbs. (145 Nm); plus 120 degrees.
  4.  
  5. Raise the engine cradle into place and install the 3 bolts. Tighten the 3 bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Reconnect the suspension position sensors to the lower control arms.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flywheel holder tool and install the oil pan-to-Trans brace. Tighten the 4 bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the wheelhouse splash shields and the right front wheel.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle and install the accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
