Exhaust Manifold

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engine
LEFT
  1. Remove the engine assembly.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt the lower and upper heat shield bolts, and remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the AIR injection pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. Pull the AIR injection pipe away from the exhaust manifold to enable easier access to the fastening nuts for the manifold.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt fastening the coolant pipe and the engine lift bracket to the cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil level (dipstick) indicator tube by grasping the tube firmly and pulling upwards for removal.
  12.  
  13. Remove the exhaust manifold fastening nuts.
  14.

To install:

  1. Install the exhaust manifold nuts, and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Push the oil level (dipstick) indicator tube into place.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolt fastening the coolant pipe and the engine lift bracket to the cylinder head.
    1. Ensure the bolt passes through the attached components. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

  6.  
  7. Coat the AIR injection pipe bolts with high temperature anti-seize compound, install the air injection pipe to the exhaust manifold and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Coat the heat shield bolts with high temperature anti-seize compound, install the exhaust manifold heat shields, and tighten the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Replace the engine assembly.
  12.  

Right
  1. Remove the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Remove the coolant intake pipe.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the exhaust manifold lower heat shield.
  8.  
  9. Unbolt the catalytic converter hanger bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the exhaust manifold rear lower two fastening nuts.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the exhaust manifold front lower two fastening nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts.
  18.  


NOTE
The upper heat shield will stay in place, the bolts are removed to enable access to the AIR injection pipe.

  1. Unbolt and remove the AIR injection pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  2.  
  3. Pull the AIR injection pipe away from the exhaust manifold to enable easier access to the fastening nuts for the manifold.
  4.  
  5. Remove the AIR injection pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the exhaust manifold upper three fastening nuts.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install the upper three fastening nuts to the exhaust manifold and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Coat the AIR injection pipe bolts with high temperature anti-seize compound, install the air injection pipe to the exhaust manifold and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Coat the heat shield bolts with high temperature anti-seize compound, and tighten the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the exhaust manifold front lower two nuts and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  10.  
  11. Install the exhaust manifold rear lower two fastening nuts. Tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Bolt the catalytic converter hanger into place and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Coat the lower heat shield bolts with high temperature anti-seize compound, and tighten the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle, install the coolant intake pipe.
  18.  
  19. Install the transmission.
  20.  

4.5L and 4.9L Engines
RIGHT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air cleaner.
  2.  
  3. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Disconnect the oxygen and coolant temperature sensors.
  4.  
  5. Remove the catalytic converter-to-AIR pipe clip bolt. Remove the upper manifold-to-cylinder head bolts. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the converter air pipe bracket from the stud and remove the converter-to-manifold exhaust pipe.
  8.  
  9. Support the engine cradle with screw jacks and remove the rear cradle bolts. Loosen the front cradle bolts and slightly lower the Engine cradle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the remaining exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head bolts, the AIR pipe, and the manifold.
  12.  
  13. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the exhaust manifold and replace the AIR pipe. Tighten the manifold mounting bolts to 16-18 ft. lbs. (21-24 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the manifold-to-converter exhaust pipe and replace the converter air pipe bracket to the stud.
  4.  
  5. Raise the Engine cradle and install the rear cradle bolts. Tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle. Replace the upper manifold-to-cylinder head bolts.
  8.  
  9. Replace the converter air pipe to AIR pipe clip bolt.
  10.  
  11. Connect the coolant temperature and oxygen sensor connectors. Replace the exhaust crossover pipe.
  12.  
  13. Replace the air cleaner and connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the Engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

LEFT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the cooling fan(s) and the exhaust crossover pipe.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine drive belt and the AIR pump pivot bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the belt tensioner and the power steering pump brace.
  6.  
  7. Remove the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head bolts, the AIR pipe, and the manifold.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install the manifold, AIR pipe and exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head bolts. Tighten to 16-18 ft. lbs. (21-24 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the belt tensioner and the power steering pump brace.
  6.  
  7. Install the AIR pump pivot bolt and the serpentine drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Install both cooling fans and the exhaust crossover pipe.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

4.6L Engine
LEFT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator cover panel. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the left and right engine torque struts and position out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine cooling fans.
  8.  
  9. Install engine support fixture J 28467-A.
  10.  
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 2 nuts securing the motor mount to the engine cradle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 2 bolts securing the motor mount bracket to the crankcase.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 2 bolts securing the motor mount bracket to the cylinder head.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 2 nuts securing the motor mount to the mount bracket.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the Y-pipe from the front of the catalytic converter and position the converter out of the way.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Raise the engine by adjusting the engine support fixture.
  26.  
  27. Remove the motor mount and bracket.
  28.  
  29. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear alternator bracket.
  32.  
  33. Remove the 2 bolts at the manifold outlet flange.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the oxygen sensor.
  36.  
  37. Remove the exhaust manifold from the cylinder head and remove the manifold.
  38.  
  39. Remove the gasket. Remove the oxygen sensor from the manifold.
  40.  

To install:

  1. Position the exhaust manifold by inserting the outlet pipe partially into the exhaust crossover pipe and moving the manifold into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the gasket to the manifold. Insert 2 screws to hold the gasket in place.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the manifold bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Coat the oxygen sensor threads with Hi temperature anti-seize compound and install the sensor. Tighten sensor nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the oxygen sensor connector. Install the rear alternator bracket. Tighten the crankcase bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) and the alternator bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install 2 new bolts at the manifold outlet flange and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Position the motor mount and bracket.
  14.  
  15. Loosely install the 2 nuts securing the mount to the bracket.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Loosely install the 2 screws securing the mount bracket at the cylinder head.
  20.  
  21. Lower the engine into the installed position guiding the motor mount studs in the cradle holes.
  22.  
  23. Raise the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Loosely install the 2 nuts to the bottom of the motor mount.
  26.  
  27. Loosely install the 2 bolts securing the mount bracket to the crankcase.
  28.  
  29. Tighten the fasteners in the above steps to 25 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the 2 bolts at the converter to exhaust Y-pipe and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Remove the engine support fixture J 28467-A.
  36.  
  37. Install the engine cooling fans.
  38.  
  39. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  40.  
  41. Connect the left and right engine torque struts and adjust and tighten.
  42.  
  43. Install the radiator trim panel.
  44.  
  45. Connect the negative battery cable.
  46.  

RIGHT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the rear oxygen sensor at the rear of the right cam cover. Disconnect the harness clip.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the Y-pipe from the front of the catalytic converter.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the suspension position sensor at lower control arm from both sides.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  12.  
  13. Place a support below the rear cross member of the engine cradle and remove the 4 cradle to body bolts.
  14.  
  15. Lower the rear of the engine cradle and disconnect the Y-pipe from the exhaust crossover and from the manifold.
  16.  
  17. Remove the manifold nuts and remove the manifold.
  18.  
  19. Remove the gasket from the manifold. Replace if damaged. Remove the oxygen sensor from the manifold as necessary.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Coat the oxygen sensor threads with hi-temperature anti-seize compound. Tighten sensor to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the gasket, manifold, and nuts. Tighten nuts to 25 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the exhaust Y-pipe and install 4 new bolts. Tighten the M10 bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the M8 bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Raise the engine cradle into position and tighten the bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the exhaust Y-pipe to the catalytic converter and tighten 2 new bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the suspension position sensors to the lower control arms.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle and connect the oxygen sensor. Install the harness retainer.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
