Oil Pan

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Detach the oil level sensor connection and the C-clip from the oil pan housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan from the oil pan housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil level sensor bolts and sensor from the oil pan.
  16.

NOTE
Clean the oil pan and gasket surfaces.

  1. Install the oil level sensor to the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the oil level sensor bolts until fully seated and not stripped.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan gasket.
  6.  
  7. Connect the oil level sensor wire to the housing using the C-clip.
    1. Replace the oil level sensor wire electrical connector O-ring before installation.
    2.  
    3. Supporting the oil pan will aid in the installation of the oil level sensor wire electrical connector through the oil pan housing.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan and tighten the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Secure the oil level sensor electrical connection.
  12.  
  13. Install the splash shield and bolts, tightening the bolts until fully seated, but not stripped.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Refill the engine oil.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  

4.5L and 4.9L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the crankcase.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 torque converter/flywheel covers from the lower side of the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. On the Eldorado and Seville, remove the exhaust crossunder pipe and reposition.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan-to-engine bolts and the oil pan.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  


NOTE
Apply a 1 / 4 inch bead of RTV at the rear main bearing cap and front cover to block joints.

  1. Install the oil pan and oil pan-to-engine bolts. Tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the exhaust crossunder pipe.
  4.  
  5. Install the 2 torque converter/flywheel covers.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Fill the crankcase.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.

4.6L Engine
  1. Remove the engine assembly and place it on a stand.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 13 oil pan bolts and remove the oil pan.
  6.  


NOTE
The oil pan gasket is reusable unless damaged. Do not remove the gasket from the oil pan groove unless replacement is required.

To install:

  1. Install a new oil pan seal, if required by starting the seal into the pan groove and working the seal into the groove in both directions.
  2.  


WARNING
Once the seal is exposed to oil, it will expand and no longer stay in the groove without wrinkles. If this happens, replace with a new seal.

  1. Position the oil pan to the crankcase and install the 13 retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence shown.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine assembly and fill the crankcase with oil.
  4.
