REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engine

NOTE
Some special tools required for this procedure are listed:

J 35268-A Camshaft/Front Main Seal Installer
 
J 36660 Torque/Angle Meter
 
J 42069-1 or 42069-2 Camshaft gear locking tools
 
J 42098 Crank Hub Torx® socket
 
J 42065 Crank Hub holding tool
 


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the resonance chamber.
  6.  
  7. The front timing belt cover and the timing belt have to be removed.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear timing belt.
  10.  
  11. With special tool J 42065 in place to prevent the movement of the crankshaft, remove the crankshaft drive gear bolt and remove the crankshaft drive gear.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt the lower generator bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pan housing, the oil pump housing bolts, and the oil pump.
  16.  
  17. Remove the Front main oil seal oil pump.
  18.

Clean the oil pump and engine block sealing surfaces. Ensure that all the old gasket material is removed.

  1. Install the oil pump, and the oil pump housing bolts.
    1. Tighten the oil pump housing bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).

  3. Using the special tool J 35268-A install the front main oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Apply a sealant to the engine block/oil pump joints.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan housing.
  8.  
  9. Replace the lower generator bolt, tighten it to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the crankshaft drive gear and using a new crankshaft drive gear bolt, tighten the bolt to 184 ft. lbs. + 45° + 15° using J 36660 Torque/Angle Meter.
    1. Use J 42098 to tighten, with J42065 in place to prevent movement of the crankshaft.

  13. Install the rear timing belt cover.
  14.  
  15. Install the timing belt.
  16.  
  17. Install the front timing belt cover.
  18.  
  19. Install the resonance chamber.
  20.  
  21. Refill and bleed the coolant system.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  

4.5L and 4.9L Engine
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan following the procedures outlined earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws and one nut securing the oil pump to the engine.
  6.  


CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reversal of the removal procedure.

4.6L Engine
  1. Remove the front cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the three (3) oil pump mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the pump and drive spacer.
