REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper radiator covers
    1. Release the self-locking tabs
    2.  
    3. Remove the screws
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the resonance chamber
  8.  
  9. Detach the electrical connectors from the primary cooling fan and the cooling fan control switches.
  10.  
  11. Unhook the radiator air bleed hose from the radiator.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler pipefitting and seals from the radiator.
    1. Position the pipes away from the radiator.
    2.  

  14.  
  15. Disconnect the coolant hose from the secondary auxiliary coolant pump.
  16.  
  17. Remove the secondary AIR cut-off valve bracket bolts from the fan housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the condenser-to-radiator bracket bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the radiator inlet and outlet hose from the radiator.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the secondary auxiliary coolant pump.
  24.  
  25. Remove the radiator and primary fan as a unit from the radiator support.
    1. Lift the fans using a rocking motion to unseat the upper and lower retainers.

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fan control switches.
  2.  
  3. Install the primary fan to the radiator, by engaging the tab and installing the bolts. Tighten the bolts to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the upper retainers to the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Install the radiator and primary fan as a unit to the radiator support.
    1. The upper retainers must engage brackets on the radiator support.
    2.  
    3. The tabs on the bottom of the radiator must engage the lower retainers.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Secure the electrical connector to the secondary auxiliary coolant pump.
  10.  
  11. Connect the radiator inlet and outlet hoses to the radiator.
  12.  
  13. Install the condenser-to-radiator bracket bolts, and tighten until the bolts re fully seated and not stripped.
  14.  
  15. Install the secondary AIR cut-off valve bracket and bolts to the fan housing.
  16.  
  17. Connect the coolant hose the secondary auxiliary coolant pump.
  18.  
  19. Secure the transmission oil cooler pipefitting and seals to the radiator. Tighten the oil cooler pipefitting to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Connect the coolant hose to the coolant reservoir.
  22.  
  23. Secure the connectors to the primary cooling can and the cooling fan control switches.
  24.  
  25. Install the resonance chamber.
  26.  
  27. Refill the cooling system.
  28.  
  29. Install the upper radiator covers.
    1. Insert the self-locking tabs.
    2.  
    3. Install the screws.
    4.

  31. Connect the negative battery cable.
  32.  

4.5L and 4.9L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the plastic radiator support cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove right and left cooling fans. On Eldorado and Seville, remove rear-cooling fan.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose at filler neck.
  10.  
  11. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses from radiator.
  12.  
  13. Remove engine oil cooler lines and transaxle oil cooler lines from the radiator.
  14.  
  15. Remove the radiator top support.
  16.  
  17. Remove radiator from car, lifting radiator straight up and out.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install radiator in vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install radiator top support. Tighten radiator support retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect transaxle oil cooler lines at radiator. Tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect oil cooler lines at radiator. Tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install upper and lower radiator hoses to radiator securing hose clamps.
  10.  
  11. Connect coolant reservoir hose at filler neck.
  12.  
  13. Install cooling fan(s) and plastic radiator support cover.
  14.  
  15. Fill cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Connect negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks. Check transaxle fluids level and add, as necessary. Allow engine to come to normal operating temperature and check again for leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the radiator coolant.
  4.  
  5. Disable the SIR (air bag) system.
  6.  
  7. Relocate the Forward Discriminating Sensor out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the right and left engine support torque struts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cooling fans.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the upper and lower coolant hoses.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the engine oil cooler lines from the right radiator end tank.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler lines from the left radiator end tank.
  20.  
  21. Remove the radiator top support retainers and lift the radiator up and out of the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Position the radiator in the vehicle and tighten the radiator support retaining bolts to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the transaxle oil cooler lines to the left radiator end tank.
  4.  
  5. Connect the engine oil cooler lines to the right radiator end tank.
  6.  
  7. Connect the right and left engine support torque struts.
  8.  
  9. Connect the upper and lower coolant hoses.
  10.  
  11. Install the cooling fans.
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  14.  
  15. Reinstall the Forward Discriminating Sensor.
  16.  
  17. Enable the SIR (air bag) system.
  18.  
  19. Fill the radiator with coolant.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.
