Rocker Arms and Valve Covers

3.0L Engine
RIGHT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake plenum and the intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug boots from the spark plugs, and then the wires from the routing retainers. Make sure they are tagged for proper installation.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder screws, the cover, and the gasket/seals. Discard the seals.
  8.  


NOTE
Ensure all eight sealing O-rings are accounted for. They may stick to the camshaft bearing caps or fall into the oil return journals in the cylinder head.

To install:

  1. Install new valve cover seals. Lightly coat the new seals, including O-rings, with engine oil prior to installation. The oil application will assist in holding the O-ring seals to the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Apply a thin coat of silicone sealer at the front and back of the seals.
  4.  
  5. Install the valve cover to the cylinder head, and tighten the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Route the spark plug wires into the retainers, and install the plug boots to the spark plugs.
  8.  
  9. Replace the intake manifold and the intake plenum.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

LEFT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake plenum and the intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug boots from the spark plugs, and then the wires from the routing retainers. Make sure they are tagged for proper installation.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil filler spout.
    1. Unlock the tab.
    2.  
    3. Twist counterclockwise.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder screws, the cover, and the gasket/seals. Discard the seals.
  10.  


NOTE

To install:

  7. Install the oil filler spout.
    1. Insert the spout and twist clockwise.
    2.  
    3. Ensure the locking tab seats on the valve cover bolt head.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Route the spark plug wires into the retainers, and install the plug boots to the spark plugs.
  10.  
  11. Replace the intake manifold and the intake plenum.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

4.5L and 4.9L Engines
RIGHT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air cleaner and the AIR management valve with bracket, move the assembly aside.
  2.  
  3. From the throttle body, remove the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) hose.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right side spark plug wires and conduit.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fuel vapor canister pipe bracket from the valve cover stud.
  8.  
  9. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing. Remove the heater hose from the thermostat housing and move it aside.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose from the intake manifold.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder screws, the cover, and the gasket/seals. Discard them.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rocker arm pivot-to-rocker arm support bolts, the pivots, and the rocker arms.
  16.  
  17. If necessary, remove the rocker arm support-to-cylinder head nuts/bolts and the support.
  18.  
  19. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces. Inspect the parts for wear and/or damage and replace the parts, if necessary.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the parts with clean engine oil, use a new gasket and coat both sides with RTV sealant, install RTV sealant between the intake manifold-to-cylinder head mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arms and pivots to the rocker arm support. Tighten the pivot bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm support and place each pushrod into the rocker arm seat.
  6.  
  7. Install the rocker arm support retaining nuts, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the rocker arm support retaining bolts, tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the rocker arm cover seals and place the molded seal into the groove in the rocker arm cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the rocker arm cover and tighten the mounting screws to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose and the EECS pipe bracket.
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wires and conduit. Connect the MAP hose to the throttle body.
  18.  
  19. Install the air management and bracket assembly.
  20.  
  21. Replace the heater hose and air cleaner assembly.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  24.  

LEFT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air cleaner, the PCV valve, the throttle return spring and the serpentine drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the lower power steering pump bracket nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the power steering pump, the belt tensioner, the bracket-to-engine bolts, and the bracket. Move the power steering pump assembly toward the front of the vehicle; do not disconnect the pressure hoses.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left side spark plug wires and conduit.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm cover-to-cylinder screws, the cover, and the gasket/seals. Discard them.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker arm pivot-to-rocker arm support bolts, the pivots, and the rocker arms.
  12.  
  13. If necessary, remove the rocker arm support-to-cylinder head nuts/bolts and the support.
  14.  
  15. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces. Inspect the parts for wear and/or damage and replace the parts, if necessary.
  16.  

To install:

  5. Install the rocker arm support and place each pushrod into the rocker arm seat.
  6.  
  7. Install the rocker arm support retaining nuts, tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the rocker arm support retaining bolts, tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the rocker arm cover seals and place the molded seal into the groove in the rocker arm cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the rocker arm cover and tighten the mounting screws to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the spark plug wires and conduit.
  16.  
  17. Install the power steering pump, belt tensioner and bracket assembly. Replace the accessory drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Install the throttle return spring and the PCV valve.
  20.  
  21. Install the air cleaner and connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
