CAUTION
Never open, service, or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. In addition, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engine

Two electric engine coolant pumps are used in conjunction with the belt driven mechanical pump. The electric pump mounted on the passenger side strut tower, assists the flow of warm coolant to the heater core at idle when ambient temperature is low. This pump runs at all times with the engine on. A failure with this pump would result in poor heating performance especially at idle. The second electric pump is mounted on the driver's side of the radiator, which provides additional flow of coolant through the radiator. This pump is energized when coolant temperatures reach 194° F (90° C).

The mechanical engine water pump, driven by the serpentine drive belt, provides a constant flow of coolant through the engine at all times while the engine is running.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the resonance chamber.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front timing belt cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump bolts and the pump.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump and engine block sealing surfaces.
    1. Coat the seal ring of the water pump with silicone grease, GM P/N 12345579
    2.  

  2.  
  3. Install the water pump and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the front timing belt cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the resonance chamber.
  8.  
  9. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

Primary electric pump
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Detach the electrical connector from the pump.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the hoses from the pump.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clips from the pump and the pump from the primary fan housing .
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reversal of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

secondary electric pump
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Detach the electrical connector from the coolant pump.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the hoses from the coolant pump.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cruise control module bracket nuts.
  10.  
  11. Reposition the cruise control module bracket aside.
  12.  
  13. Remove the coolant pump from the wheelhouse panel.

To install:

  1. Install the coolant pump to the wheelhouse panel.
  2.  
  3. Position the cruise control module bracket in the proper mounting area.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the nuts until fully seated and not stripped.
  6.  
  7. Attach the hoses to the coolant pump.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connector to the coolant pump.
  10.  
  11. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

4.5L and 4.9L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air filter assembly. Disconnect and remove the coolant recovery tank.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and remove the cross brace.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the serpentine drive belt and the water pump pulley.
  12.  
  13. Remove the water pump-to-engine bolts and the pump.
  14.

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Place a new gasket over the water pump studs.
  4.  
  5. Install the water pump. Tighten the water pump bolts as follows:
    1. Water pump-to-engine Torx® bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Water pump-to-engine stud nuts to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Hex head bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
    6.  
    7. Remaining hex head bolts to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
    8.  

  6.  
  7. Install the water pump pulley. Install the water pump pulley bolts finger-tight.
  8.  
  9. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the cross brace.
  14.  
  15. Install and connect the coolant recovery tank. Install the air filter assembly.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Fill cooling system and check for leaks. Start the engine and allow it to come to normal operating temperature. Recheck for leaks. Top-up the coolant.
  20.  


NOTE
Because the engine block and radiator are aluminum, make sure the antifreeze solution is approved for use in cooling systems with a high aluminum content. GM recommends the use of a supplement/sealant 3634621 or equivalent, specifically designed for use in aluminum engines to protect the engine from damage.

4.6L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump drive belt and the water pump pulley.
  10.  
  11. Remove the water pump-to-engine bolts and the pump.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Place a new gasket over the water pump studs.
  4.  
  5. Install the water pump and tighten the housing bolts to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the water pump pulley. Install the water pump pulley bolts finger tight.
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Fill cooling system and check for leaks. Start the engine and allow it to come to normal operating temperature. Recheck for leaks. Top-up the coolant.
  18.  


NOTE
