Fluid recommendations

Use only DEXRON®III ATF. The use of any other fluid will cause severe damage to the transaxle.

level check

Catera

NOTE
This transmission assembly does not have a fluid level indicator (dipstick). The fluid level can be checked by removing a plug on the side of the transmission fluid pan. After a transmission service, or a drain and refill, approximately 7 qt. of DEXRON III ®fluid is installed.

  1. The fluid level should be checked with the transmission at normal operating temperature. The transmission fluid temperature can be verified using a scan tool. Temperature will greatly effect fluid level.
  2.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle securely. Ensure that the fluid is at operating temperature. The vehicle must be level.
  4.
  5. Remove the oil pan fill plug on the side of the oil pan.
  6.

NOTE
Fluid level should be at the lower edge of the plug opening. Adjust the fluid level as necessary. Use a suction gun to add fluid, if necessary.

DRAIN AND REFILL

Catera
  1. Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands.
  2.

NOTE
Make sure the vehicle is level.

  1. Position a suitable drain pan (12 quart pan is recommended) under the transmission fluid pan,. Remove the oil pan bolts from the front and sides only. Loosen the rear oil pan bolts approximately four turns and allow the fluid to drain. If the pan is stuck to the transmission, tap it lightly with a plastic mallet, or pry the pan away from the transmission housing to drain the main case.
  2.
  3. When the fluid has drained, remove the remaining retaining bolts. Allow the pan to drop and slowly drain the remaining fluid.
  4.
  5. When all the fluid has drained, remove the pan. Remove and discard the pan gasket.
  6.
  7. Remove the front oil pan bolts leaving one corner bolt in loosely.
  8.
  9. Lightly tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet or pry on it to drain the fluid.
  10.
  11. Remove the front oil pan corner bolt, drop the pan, and remove the gasket.
  12.
  13. Remove the filter retaining bolts and remove the filter.
  14.

To install:

  1. Now is the time to clean the transmission case, the front adapter case, the oil pan gasket surfaces using a suitable solvent. Allow them to air-dry, making sure all traces of gasket material are removed.
  2.
  3. Install the gasket, install the fluid filter, and tighten the filter bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the front oil pan; install the front oil pan gasket, tighten the bolts to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the fluid pan and gasket with the retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts evenly to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  8.
  9. Add approximately 7 qt. of DEXRON ®III fluid.
  10.
  11. The fluid level should be checked with the transmission at normal operating temperature.
  12.
  13. Remove the oil pan fill plug on the side of the oil pan.
  14.
  15. Fluid level should be at the lower edge of the plug opening. Adjust the fluid level as necessary.
  16.
  17. Lower the vehicle and road test.
