FLUID RECOMMENDATIONS

Catera

The recommended lubricant for the rear axle assembly is SAE 80W-90 GL -5 gear lubricant (GM P/N 12345977 or equivalent).

LEVEL CHECK

  1. Ensure the vehicle is level.
  2.
  3. Clean the area around the rear axle housing filler plug.
  4.
  5. Remove the rear axle housing filler plug from the passenger side of the rear axle differential.
  6.

The lubricant level is to be maintained at the bottom edge of the filler plug hole WHEN COLD. Use only the recommended lubricant as specified.

  1. Install the rear axle housing filler plug into the rear axle differential.
  2.

DRAIN AND REFILL

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.
  3. Support the differential with a suitable (transmission) jack.
  4.
  5. Remove the ABS sensor connectors.
  6.
  7. Remove the differential support bracket bolts from the differential support bracket.
  8.
  9. Remove the rear differential bushing bolts from the differential.
  10.

NOTE
The differential may be lowered slightly (4 to 5 inches) without the removal of the drive axles or the propeller shaft from the differential. This provides sufficient clearance to remove the rear axle housing cover.

  1. Lower the differential slightly.
  2.
  3. Place a drip pan underneath the differential.
  4.
  5. Remove the rear axle housing cover bolts.
  6.
  7. Remove the rear axle housing cover from the rear axle housing.
  8.
  9. Clean the sealing surfaces on the rear axle housing and cover.
  10.
  11. Remove the ABS sensor bolts and sensor from the cover.
