Blower Motor

Blower Motor location can change from year to year. It can change with the trim level of the vehicle. A vehicle that has front and rear climate controls may be configured differently than a vehicle that has front controls only. The following are two different repair procedures. One is given because the blower motor is located and accessed in the engine compartment, the other is given because the blower motor is mounted inside the vehicle.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Engine Compartment Procedure
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cowl cross-tower brace.
  4.  
  5. With a utility knife, cut the rubber insulator at the guide lines and remove the metal patch plate beneath.
  6.  
  7. Remove the blower motor electrical connector, cooling hose and mounting screws.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the blower motor from the case.
  10.  

To install:


NOTE
Failure to maintain a 25 mm clearance (about an inch) between the spark plug wires and the HVAC blower motor may result in improper operation or failure of the blower motor.

  1. Install the blower motor fan assembly.
  2.  
  3. Connect the blower motor electrical connector, cooling hose and mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the patch plate and the seal insulator patch.
  6.  
  7. Replace the cowl cross-tower brace (two nuts each side).
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Passenger Compartment Procedure
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right hand instrument panel insulator.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the blower motor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right hand body hinge pillar trim panel by pulling it away from the from body hinge pillar.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts/screws holding the blower motor cover and remove the cover.
    1. Remove two bolts/screws, allowing the third bolt (nearest the right hand rear corner) of the module to remain in place.
    2.  
    3. While supporting the blower motor, remove the third bolt.
    4.  
    5. Remove the isolator from the blower motor flange, if necessary.

To install:


NOTE
The impeller is part of a blower motor service kit. The kit is preassembled and balanced. Therefore, do not attempt to separate the impeller from the blower motor.

  1. Install the motor.
    1. Position the isolator on the blower motor flange.
    2.  
    3. Align the motor with the opening in the bottom of the module and carefully move the motor up and into position.
    4.

  3. Install the bolts/screws and tighten them to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the right hand body hinge pillar trim panel by pressing it into position until retainers snap into place.
  6.  
  7. Connect the blower motor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the right hand instrument panel insulator.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

Catera
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the passenger side sound insulator positive locking tabs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sound insulator.
  6.  
  7. Remove the passenger side front floor air outlet fastening clip. Remove the passenger side front floor air outlet.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument panel compartment.
  10.  
  11. Bend the "accordion" section of the supply duct from the side air vent downward to remove it.
  12.  
  13. Unscrew the motor housing screws to remove the blower motor housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the blower motor from the housing.

To install:

  1. Attach the blower motor to the housing by tightening the screws motor screws until fully seated and not stripped.
  2.  
  3. Install the blower motor housing. Tighten the screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Replace the supply duct air vent, by inserting the supply duct to the module side first, then bend it at the "accordion" section of the duct to insert into position.
  6.  
  7. Replace the instrument panel compartment.
  8.  
  9. Install the passenger side front floor air outlet.
  10.  
  11. Install the passenger side sound insulator.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

Eldorado and Seville
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove 2 nuts from each side and remove the cowl cross-tower brace.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 cowl relay center bracket mounting nuts and position the cowl relay center aside.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wiring connector and the cooling tube from the blower motor and remove the blower motor mounting screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the MAP sensor mounting bracket and position aside.
  10.  
  11. Tilt the blower motor in the case and remove the fan from the blower motor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the blower motor from the case.
  14.  
  15. Remove the fan from the case.

To install:

  1. Install the fan into the case.
  2.  
  3. Position the blower motor into the case, then install the fan onto the blower motor.
  4.  
  5. Install the MAP sensor-mounting bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install the blower motor mounting screws and connect the cooling hose and wiring connector.
  8.  
  9. Position the cowl relay center and install the cowl relay center bracket nuts.
