Instrument Cluster

The instrument cluster is centered above the steering column in the instrument panel and is removable from the rear of the panel (toward the steering wheel). The cluster contains instruments that provide the driver with information on vehicle performance.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




NOTE
When an instrument cluster is replaced the law requires either the odometer reading of the replacement unit be set to register the original mileage or that a label be installed on the driver's door frame to show the previous odometer reading and the date of replacement.

Catera
  1. Remove the center air deflector.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew the screw from the right-hand side of the instrument cluster.
  4.  
  5. Rotate the steering wheel to expose the screw location on the upper steering column cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screw plug from the left side of the upper steering column cover.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the steering wheel to expose the right side of the cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screw plug from the right side of the upper steering column cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper column cover from the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Unscrew the screw from the upper column cover collar (the screw also retains the bottom of the I/P).
  16.  
  17. Remove the collar from the upper column.
  18.  
  19. Dislodge the right side of the instrument cluster.
  20.  

Deville and Fleetwood
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper trim pad as follows:
    1. Carefully pry out the A/C outlets.
    2.

  1. Remove one screw from behind each outlet and 3 screws through the defroster outlet.

  1. Remove the glove box module retaining screws. Disconnect the wiring connectors from the switches and light and remove the glove box module.
  2.  
  3. Remove 2 screws working through the glove box opening.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the in-vehicle temperature sensor electrical connector and aspirator tube.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, remove the solar sensor from the trim pad.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper trim pad.
  10.

  1. Remove the 2 screws and the plate.

  1. Remove the instrument cluster attaching screws.
  2.  
  3. Label and disconnect the wiring connectors.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shift indicator cable clip and remove the instrument cluster.
  6.

To install:

  1. Position the instrument cluster and connect the electrical connectors.
  2.  
  3. Install the attaching screws and tighten to 13 inch lbs. (1.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the plate with the 2 screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper trim pad in the reverse order of removal.
  8.  
  9. Install the shift indicator cable clip and adjust the shift indicator as follows:
    1. Position and release the shift lever in the N gate notch.
    2.  
    3. Move the clip on the edge of the shift bowl to center the pointer on N .
    4.  
    5. Push the clip onto the bowl. Make sure the cable rests on the bowl, not on the column jacket. Make sure the clip is tight on the bowl and does not slip.
    6.  
    7. Move the shift lever through all positions and then back to N to check adjustment. Make sure the pointer covers a portion of each graphic.

1990-91 Eldorado and Seville
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster trim plate as follows:
    1. Remove the left side A/C vent.
    2.  
    3. Remove the radio trim plate.
    4.  
    5. Remove the retaining screws and the trim plate.
    6.

  5. Remove the screws and the filter lens.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 screws and the telltale warning lamp lens.
  8.  
  9. Remove the trip odometer reset button.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 instrument cluster retaining screws and remove the cluster.
  12.

  1. Align the instrument cluster with the electrical connectors and push the cluster into the instrument panel. Install the 2 retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the trip odometer reset button.
  4.  
  5. Install the telltale warning lamp lens and the filter lens.
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument cluster trim plate in the reverse order of removal.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

1992-98 Eldorado and Seville
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Pull fuses A5-IPC (Ignition) and B5-IPC (Battery) from the rear compartment fuse panel and fuse A3-IGN1 from the engine compartment fuse panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel upper trim panel as follows:
    1. Use a small flat-bladed tool to pry up the defroster grille.
    2.  
    3. Remove the Sunload and Headlamp Auto Control sensors from the defroster grille.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 3 screws retaining the upper trim panel through the defroster grille opening.
    6.  
    7. Remove the A/C vents from the front of the instrument panel by releasing the tab on each side from the inside vent and pulling out.
    8.  
    9. Working through the vent openings, remove the screws retaining the upper trim panel.
    10.  
    11. Remove the upper trim panel.
    12.  

  6.  
  7. Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors on top of the instrument cluster.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 4 cluster-to-instrument panel retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Raise the cluster. If equipped with digital cluster, remove the 2 screws securing the PRNDL mechanism.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster.

To install:

  1. Position the cluster to the instrument panel. Make sure the analog needles are positioned at zero.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with digital cluster, install the 2 screws securing the PRNDL mechanism.
  4.  
  5. Install the 4 cluster-to-instrument panel retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connectors to the top of the cluster.
  8.  
  9. Install the instrument panel upper trim panel in the reverse order of removal.
  10.  
  11. Install the fuses in the fuse panel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
