ADJUSTMENT

Deville and Fleetwood
  1. Make sure the brake shoes are properly adjusted.
  2.
  3. Apply and release the parking brake 6 times to 10 clicks, then release the parking brake pedal.
  4.
  5. Check the parking brake pedal for full release by turning the ignition ON and checking the `BRAKE' warning light. The light should be OFF. If the light is ON and the brake appears to be released, operate the pedal release lever and pull downward on the front parking brake cable to remove slack from the assembly.
  6.
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Remove the access hole plugs in the rear brake backing plates.
  10.
  11. Adjust the parking brake cable until a 1 / 8 in. drill bit can be inserted through the access hole into the space between the shoeweb and the parking brake lever. The cable is adjusted properly when a 1 / 8 in. bit will fit into the space, but a 1 / 4 in. bit will not.
  12.
  13. Apply the parking brake to 4 clicks. The wheels should not move when you try to rotate them in a forward direction; they should drag or not move when you try to rotate them in a rearward direction.
  14.
  15. Release the parking brake and check for free wheel rotation.
  16.
  17. Install the access hole plugs and lower the vehicle.
  18.

Eldorado and Seville
  1. Apply the service brake with a pedal force of approximately 150 lbs. and release.
  2.
  3. Fully apply the parking brake using approximately 125 lbs. pedal force and release. Apply and release the parking brake in the same manner, 2 more times.
  4.
  5. Check the parking brake pedal for full release by turning the ignition ON and checking the `BRAKE' warning light. The light should be OFF. If the light is ON and the brake appears to be released, operate the pedal release lever and pull downward on the front parking brake cable to remove slack from the pedal assembly.
  6.
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Check the parking brake levers on the rear calipers. The levers should be against the stops on the caliper. If the levers are not against the stops, check for binding in the rear cables and/or loosen the cables at the adjuster until both levers are against their stops.
  10.
  11. Tighten the parking brake cable at the adjuster until either the left or right lever begins to move off of stop. Then loosen the adjuster until the lever is again resting on the stop. Both levers should now be resting on the stops.
  12.
  13. Operate the parking brake several times to check the adjustment. A firm pedal feel should be obtained by pumping the pedal less than 3 1 / 2 full strokes on 1990-91 vehicles or depressing the pedal less than one full stroke on 1992-98 vehicles.
